#682 folding-2.pdc.kth.se: Noticeable V7 slowdown
Has any one looked into the problem with this collection server it will not allow more than 320kbps most of the time 256kbps from the v7 bigadv on Windows7 it takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours to upload a WU to it. My Linux machines take about 10 minuets to upload over the same router and Internet connection. I can run Linux on a machine and upload a completed bigadv wu in 10 minutes then switch it over to Windows7 complete a WU and it will take 1 to 3 hours to upload. I can take that same machine and running on Windows 7 send a 100MB file to my son in Long Beach CA. in 7 minutes which is not too far from Stanford so a simple assumption tells me the problem is on Stanford's end. Will somebody please check into this. It has been going on way too long. Windows 7 Resource monitor reports it as folding-2.pdc.kth.se / 130.237.232.237 remote port 8080

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
Going from the address, that is one of the servers in Sweden.
Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
The server is working fine. Sometimes there can be a transatlantic network bottleneck, unfortunately.

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
Unfortunately for me there is a transatlantic network bottleneck every time I send a 6900 or 6901 WU. So I guess you are saying if I do not like it do not run Windows because nothing can be done about it. OK I can live with that I will just run them all on Linux v7 I do not get any 6900 or 6901 WU's on Linux. Here is my most recent Windows return. At least it did not disconnect this time and have to start over 2 or 3 times.

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
43 mins is only 15 mins better than me on any server, is the disconnect after a set period of time, say 45mins/1hr?
Have you done a tracert or a speedtest to Sweden? Perhaps there is a dodgy hop somewhere or your ISP doesn't have enough international bandwidth...

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
TraceRoute times are more like latency than like bandwidth, but the first 50 ms is spent between my home and Los Angeles and it's only 235 ms to Sweden.

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
Yeah, I understand that, although the two can be related. It might identify any errant hops, weird routing or what not, particularly if there are disconnects. Most likely the speedtest could show a low upload to Stanford - what's your download speed for that project Grandpa?

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
It downloads very fast from the same server so I have a hard time with the transatlantic network bottleneck theory. As you can see it took 48 sec. to download (23.7MB) the same WU that it took 1 1/2 hours to send. It acts more like throttling.

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
It's certainly possible. I get transfer speeds that aren't exactly speedy on most of my large file transfers from Sweden and UK supercomputing centers. If you can find a netspeed server somewhere nearby, that's always helpful. Any specific info we get, we can pass to the networking people at the supercomputing center in Sweden where the servers live (no promises on fixes, but we can try).

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
SpeedTest.Net says my upload speed to Sweeden is 1.82Mbps so it appears that the server is being throtteled.

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
Just sent a 2689 to vspj16.stanford.edu 2Mbps on the same machine Windows 7 v7 so I am leaning very heavily toward throttling on the Sweden end of things. Why would you use a server that slows things down

1) Gromacs is developed in Sweden.
2) FAH is world-wide. From Europe, Sweden may be fast and Stanford may be slow. That would be why Kasson wants speed reports.

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
I am having a hard time believing they are not throttling or understanding why the ISP to a University would throttle but apparently they are, SpeedTest.Net says my upload speed to Sweden is 1.82Mbps which would be about right for my speed but Windows 7 Resource monitor reports 320kbps most of the time 256kbps to folding-2.pdc.kth.se. I have watched the connection when uploading to folding-2.pdc.kth.se from the very start of the upload and it never gets above 327Kbps and 90% of the time runs at 256Kbps that is a very good indicator that throttling is taking place. Windows 7 Resource monitor also reports 1.82Mbps when I run the speedtest to Sweeden which shows what my upload speed should be to folding-2.pdc.kth.se and it runs at that speed through the test. Simple deduction tells me there is something wrong at folding-2.pdc.kth.se whether it is a problem with the server being overloaded or there ISP throttling I do not know but there is a problem. And I do not think it is a transatlantic network bottleneck, at least from the test I have run it does not appear to be.codysluder wrote:1) Gromacs is developed in Sweden.

Re: folding-2.pdc.kth.se
I don't have the same bottleneck, so I don't think that the server or possibly university is throttling you. It would be very unlikely for them to throttle particular users?
Knowing what I know about the vagaries of internet routing, I'm still inclined to suggest that if there is not a bottleneck, then there is an issue with routing. Hence the need for a tracert. The speedtest to Sweden might use a different routing point to the one it uses to get to the University and will certainly use different local routings. For example, my tracert to the speedtest ISP is across level3 from LA, but telia for the folding server. Also, it could be that you transatlantic carrier routes through a different landing points for the university and the speedtest (for me Telia lands in Sweden, but level3 lands in Copenhagen). So my traffic to that server goes across the atlantic on Telia (I can also check Interner2 but have only run tracert there so far), and has no issues. It is of interest as to who yours routes through and whether or not it is different.
p.s my speedtest, using level3, was about 300kbps, half the speed of the FAH servers...
p.s. it might actually be helpful if kasson did a tracert to your machine from the pdc server...

Not that I understand it but here is the tracecers from one of my Linux machines to the server in Sweeden.
Here is the one from the same machine Windows 7
