I checked server status and 128.143.48.226 seems OK, but I keep getting errors every few seconds, e.g.:

[20:03:34] Gromacs cannot continue further.
[20:03:34] Going to send back what have done.
[20:03:34] logfile size: 0
[20:03:34] Warning: Core could not open logfile.
[20:03:34] - Writing 536 bytes of core data to disk...
[20:03:34] Done: 24 -> 69 (compressed to 287.5 percent)
[20:03:34] ... Done.
[20:03:34]
[20:03:34] Folding@home Core Shutdown: EARLY_UNIT_END
[20:03:37] CoreStatus = 72 (114)
[20:03:37] Sending work to server

Any ideas? I tried shutting FAH down and restarting--no help. See longer excerpt below.

Re: Problem with 128.143.48.226?

Post by bruce »

The first message often means that the WU, itself is the problem, not the server.

The last message might mean you have two clients running in the same set of files or it might mean nothing.

Code: Select all

 Gromacs cannot continue further.
Going to send back what have done.
 logfile size: 0
Warning: Core could not open logfile.
I'm going to assume it was a bad WU and change the title and move this thread to the "specific WU" forum where others might find it when looking for Project: 3860 (Run 453, Clone 11, Gen 5) rather than for 128.143.48.226

Once you have a bad WU in your queue, you may need to delete it manually (perhaps more than once). Stop the client. Delete queue.dat, and restart the client.

Hi bruce,

The problem seems to have resolved itself. However, I just wanted to point out that the log excerpt I included shows the pattern repeating with multiple WUs, so whatever the problem was, it was problem not a specific WU. The only commonality was the server: 128.143.48.226. [There were dozens more cycles that I did not include because the message became too long.]

Anyway, the problem (from where I fold, anyway) has graduated from a really annoying practical one to a hypothetical one that is far beyond my ability to fathom. Thanks for your quick response :-) !

Bruce (too!)

I am posting here because the following possible problem may be related to the original post. I apologize if it should be posted elsewhere.

While I now have a working WU folding away, the previous one--which I thought was uploaded properly (I had checked the log cursorily and didn't see anything unusual at the time) has not been credited. When I went to check the log file again to share the WU info, I found that both the current and previous logs only go back as far as a few minutes after the apparently successful upload, so I don't have a record of the WU. [What is now the previous log file is 181k and covers the incredible span of about 50 minutes with about 150 iterations of the failure.]

Shall I just assume that a over a week's worth of folding [it is an old, slow uniprocessor PC] may have gone down the tubes because I no longer seem to have a record of which WU it was, or is there some other way to track whether it was received by the server and simply waiting to be recorded?

When you restart the client, it eitehr appends data to the existing copy of FAHlog.txt (if the file is small) or it renames it to FAHlog-Prev.txt and starts a new file (if the file is larger). Normally you can find the information you're looking for near the end of FAHlog-Prev.txt. Turning off -verbosity 9 may help. Manually renaming FAHlog-Prev to Prev1, to Prev2, etc. can help in the future. Stopping/restarting FAH less frequently can help.

Posting the output from -queueinfo (or qd) plus the filenames from work may help us spot something -- but the essential data may already have been lost.
