Protomol more problems

There now looks to be a problem downloading the protomol core. This was my 3rd attempt.

On the technical side, this core is able to take advantage of most modern CPU optimizations (SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1 and SSE4.2), however, a few compatibility issues are still present on AMD processors, resulting in the core only using SSE2 on these chips. This should change in the not-too-distant future when the issues have been worked out.

Intel and AMD have reached an agreement that will shortly allow the Intel compiler that Joe has used for this core to properly support all these optimisations for AMD chips. Once Intel release the updated version it should be a matter of a simple recompile to add support for those extensions on AMD processors. The Intel compiler produced code which is still 5-10% faster on AMD than any other compiler Joe tried, but it should be faster still once AMD support is added to the Intel compiler. Therefore for once it is not the Pande Group who are the blockage, but Intel.

Yes, I am aware that the Intel compilers are to blame. It is just another example of the kind of anti-competitive practice that hurts everyone.
Even a project like this Intel cripples AMD CPU. :evil:
The agreement you mention and the FTC complaint should help...eventually. :wink:

The frustration I meant to express was toward the road blocks to using AMD CPU and AMD GPU. It just doesn't seem to ever end. :(

Please don't go on AMD vs Intel talks, it's pretty pointless and won't help.

As stated in the news, if you are willing to run this core, you do it at your own risk by adding the -advmethod flags. So if you do so, you're welcome to report performance on your machine (both Intel and AMD, to help Joe find a workaround until he can get an updated compiler).

If you can't stand the bugs or the reduced performance, please remove the -advmethods flag.

Quite an easy choice isn't it ?

Pete, this last one you posted has no impact whatsoever, or so I have been told, on the operation of the WU or client. It has been brought up in a couple other threads already. Additionally, although that particular one ended early, it ended as expected.. there was simply no more work to do. It did not EUE.

Yeah, the lack of an EUE and the addition to the number of units completed is something I've not seen before. No problem then I guess.

Please don't go on AMD vs Intel talks, it's pretty pointless and won't help.

Well, there a great many people who are unaware that intentionally broken Intel compilers are the cause of problems.
If one reads:

One might be lead to believe the defect was with AMD hardware.

People only seek redress of the wrongs that they are aware of. 99% of computer users do not know the extent to which they have been harmed by these anti-competitive practices.

This folding software, sounds like it is a significant advancement in computational methods.
It is a pity that it is crippled on my (AMD) hardware.
Pointing out the source of this sabotage, is important if the practice is to be stopped.
Without the work of the EU, AMD, and now the FTC, you really think that Intel would willingly fix these problems?

That WU earned 21.8672 points.

If it had run to 100% it would have earned 50.56 points and if you finished exactly 43% you should earn 21.7408 points. In spite of the early ending of that WU, you got proportional points so your PPD is still just what it would have been.

No, not full credit or bonus points, but proportional credit for a somewhat shorter WU.

The FAH developers have to live with the tools that they have today and they do plan to improve the code as soon as a better compiler is available.

* Complain on a website that deals with those issues (like an Intel or AMD website.
* Write a letter to the FTC or your lawyer or your congressman.
... Posting about it on this forum won't help and it just discourages people who fold.
... FAH still needs the science to be done with whatever hardware we donors bring to the project.
* As was already said, you can choose to remove -advmethods and work on something else if it bothers you.
