Virus [NOT] In wudata_xx.chk file [Avast false alarm]

Postby MattW » Wed Apr 23, 2008 4:04 pm

I received a warning from my virus scan software (avast!) that there was a virus in my latest wudata_xx.chk file. The logfile says this is "Project: 4401 (Run 6, Clone 7, Gen 129)". I've shut the application down at present. Any illumination on this problem?

False Positive... It has been known to happen from time to time. It it not a virus, so no need to worry.

Welcome to the forum MattW.

As MstrBlstr said, Avast has been known to give false positives. A WU is essentially a random sequence of bits and if it happens to match or be near a known virus signature, AV software flag it.

For other reports like this, viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1381&p=11476&hilit=avast+virus#p11476

Thanks for the mind-easing. I'll continue to use avast, as it's the lightest-weight, least obtrusive (free) system protection software out there. I've had no end of problems with both Norton and McAffee. Sorry for not searching prior to posting; consider my wrist slapped. Perhaps this would be a good addition to a troubleshooting FAQ (which I couldn't find BTW) or a common problems sticky on this forum.

Put an exception on the FAH folder to avoid getting other false positives ;)
