NVIDIA Core_14 v1.26 available

Postby ihaque » Mon Oct 26, 2009 8:26 pm

A new Nvidia Core_14 (v1.26) has been posted. This build includes a fix that addresses problems people were having on multi-GPU systems with mismatched cards. Note that this does not include any checkpointing changes (as included in Core_11 v1.31). This should solve the problems people have had running FAH core 14 with mismatched cards - both mismatched shader counts and mismatched card generations should work now.

To update an existing folding system, you can stop the client, delete FahCore_14.exe and restart the client. The new version will be downloaded the next time a core 14 WU needs to be processed.

A couple of questions about deleting the core and restarting fah to force a download....

1) Can a core 14 WU be stopped during computation and restarted with the new core? (This, so I don't have to wait until a WU finishes before restarting.)

2) Can the old and new core co-exist in the same box but running on different GPU's? (This, so I don't have to wait for all WU in my box to finish before restarting.)

Thanks...

Yes

Yes, each GPU client would exist in a separate disk folder. The core is saved in these folders.

is there a update on core11?
I have GTX 295 with 9800GTX+. The 9800GTX uses core11, and was unable to fold.

This wasn't so much about where they cores are stored, more about different revision cores interacting on the CPU side. There must be some level of interaction, otherwise there would not have been any issue about different number of shaders or revisions of hardware. Anyway, half the GPU's were stalled this morning when I got up and the others were folding short WUs so I just updated. Looks like all picked up where they left off safely.

Thanks for your help!

Nope. You can run a mix of versions, but if you do so with mismatched cards, it's likely that the old version client will misbehave. That's just because the 1.25 and before clients don't handle mismatched cards properly, not because of an interaction with the newer client.

Vs 1.31 is out. Replace the old core between work units or it may hose the WU.

In addition to the changes mentioned in this thread, this core includes a fix that addresses problems people were having on multi-GPU systems with mismatched cards. It also includes updates to the checkpointing logic to prevent checkpoint files that are not removed from being reused on a different work unit.

Note from moderator: because of the checkpoint change, you'll want to replace FahCore_11 BETWEEN WUs since there is a high probabilty that you'll loose the work you've done on the current WU.

I got my GTX 295 and 9800GTX to work now.
I just wish that the new core11 v1.31 will be downloaded automatically.

Just wanted to make sure I understand, forgive my lack of knowledge of multi-GPU folding.

This means that now you can fold with a GTX275 and a 9600 GSO?

Hmm, well I'm trying it as we speak, and not having a lot of luck. I'm currently getting:

Run: exception thrown during GuardedRun

combined with a:

[05:40:58] Folding@home Core Shutdown: UNSTABLE_MACHINE
[05:41:02] CoreStatus = 7A (122)

I'm not sure how people post their entire fahlog, else I'd do that.

I'm running a i7920 OC'ed to 3.5, a GTX275 and the 9600 GSO. The GTX275 will run either iteration of gpu folding (if I change the gpu flag in the shortcut), and the GSO won't run either, even if the GTX275 is folding or isn't folding. I tried uninstalling the GTX275 and running the GSO by itself, and that did work.

I'm thinking there are two possibilities, one is that there is some configuration that is setup wrong, or my PSU isn't powerful enough (its a 80 plus bronze 530W).

I can move this to a new thread, but didn't seem like there was much discussion in this one and thought might help other people who got a new card, based on the new core.

are you sure it is core 14 u r using?
i have the problem when i run with core 11. Deleting core 11 will not cause it to download the latest one. I have to download core 11 manually.

Yup that was it, I missed the point that you and the other fellow were discussing. I thought you meant you shouldn't have to delete the old core and have it redownload, that it should just take care of it self. Now I realize you are suppose to deleted it and download it manually and stick it in there. I suppose I couldn't see why someone wouldn't just set it to download that copy automatically, so wasn't looking for it.

Just wanted to say that I completely agree its a bit silly to have to manually put that file in there.

Edit: Also forgot to say, thank you for your help! Another 9600 GSO folding now because of the help in the thread!

I don't think some of the newer folders realize that we are on the cutting edge of 'Super Computing' @ home. Pioneers we are. At the very least, assistants of pioneers.
Even the basic versions of single card GPU folding is not offered to mainstream folding. Adventurers we are in multi card machines.

Cheers to your efforts and to your success.
