new public NV projects 5508-5513, 5017-5022

Hi,

I'm warning you, you will start to see a new series of projects coming out this morning. The proteins we're studying here are larger and in some sense more relevant to biology than anything we've run on GPU2 to date.

However, due to the larger size of the protein, you may see a PPD drop putting NV cards more in line with ATI production. This isn't due to different benchmarking or a different way to assign points, but rather we anticipate NV to be slightly less efficient with larger proteins than it has been with the smaller ones.

Dan,

Can you tell us what credit amount has been assigned to each of these new work units?
I just picked up a P5510 and it is not in the Stanford database yet.

Should be 430 points each.

I've already picked up 3 of these work units. I'm seeing about a 1400ppd loss on a single instance. My 9800GX2 (one instance) was doing 4700ppd consistently. Now its doing 3370ppd.
i7 920 @ 4.0ghz with GTX 295 / 1x bigadv (VM), 2x GPU
T7200 @ 2.0ghz / 1x SMP
E4500 @ 2.9ghz / 1x WinSMP
E8400 @ 3.8ghz with 8800GTS 512mb / 1x SMP, 1x GPU
plus much much more.

Yep, I've picked up some 5508 and 5509's on my GTX 260's - PPD has dropped from 5,760 to about 4,400 :(

The new projects do stress my 8800GX quite a bit more.

My GPU temps had been running 80-82 C and the fan on auto running at 75%.

With 5018 running the temp went up to 90 C and the fan was running 100%.

Previously I was getting about 1:20 per frame, now 1:49 per frame.

Not wanting to run so hot, I went back to stock clocks, now getting 2:03 per frame. The fan is still running at 100% but the temp is down to 85 C.

Glad I do this for the science, not the points.

Why if these projects are larger, are they worth less? Also why is the benchmark machine an ati 3850 when the same projects are not being run on nvidia as the ones being run on Ati clients? Just seeking some clarification as this could look like it was changed just to appease ati and their clients.

Sounds good, i assume that we're receiving some very good Nvidia results then? I have both Nvidia & AMD clients running, just want to contribute :)
Points are relative anyway, so if your points drop as a result of this, so will a lot of other people's, meaning that your overtakes will have the same timings as before. The 280 should still pump out a lot of points though?

They are worth less because despite being bigger the benchmark machine processes them quicker than the old units (I think the simulations are shorter, just the proteins are bigger). The benchmark machine has always been a 3850 so nothing has changed.

And as an aside, the project staff have repeatedly said that nvidia's huge lead in the PPD stakes may change. It now has (I'm an nvidia folder too so I would be as miffed as anyone were it not for the fact that I don't give two hoots about points), so you can't say we weren't warned :)

Very exciting news ;)
Do anyone have any idea about the scientific work - is for example "P5509_lam5w_330K_g91" a lot more worth for the project than p5504_fip35_ww_domain - and is this just a naturally step thowards a better biologically output?
Is the any idea about a new performance-leader on these new projects - legoman666? ;)

Overall my farms going to drop around 25k PpD with these new protiens .......... :(
But I'll be doing better science ..........
So the run of bonus PpD with the nVidia client was good while it lasted.

Luck ........... :D
