I have updated the Guide with links to Frame Times on Project 2682 WUs (FahCore_a3) and Frame Times on Project 2686 WUs (FahCore_a3). I have also mentioned P 2682 and 2686. Hopefully with these two projects released, there won't be much shortages of bigadv WUs :eugeek:

O.K. gentlemen (and ladies), I've got an i7 rig here with an i7 920 CPU clocked @ 3.8Ghz. It was having trouble running the 2685 WU's but was nailing the lesser -a3 WU's. Thinking that I needed to upgrade from the 6.29 client to the newer 6.30 client, I just wiped out everything and installed as per Panther X's install guide for -bigadv....seems to load fine but I'm getting this:
Code: Select all

Re: Guide For Running bigadv On Windows Natively (A3 Core)

Postby PantherX » Sat Aug 07, 2010 7:28 pm

Within 19 seconds of starting the bigadv WU, it fails. Since you have OC your CPU, I believe that is is hardware related, from the WIKI:
It can also be caused by faulty memory or a bad memory controller, so you should consider both possibilities.

My guess is that the Memory Timings are too tight for F@H but may appear "stable" under normal usage. Can you run StressCPU (>1 hour) or IBT @ 2048 MB* (at least 5 iterations) without any problems? Do remember that normal WUs have less memory demands so RAM issues may not have surfaced when running them. With bigadv, the RAM usage increases significantly so even a slight error will be unstable.

A quick search states that you have 3 GB RAM. On my system, (F@H + normal usage) I use ~3 GB (4 GB RAM) so could it be possible that you are running out of memory?

*Personally, I have found that IBT would be stable @ 1024 MB but fails at 2048 MB. It would be stable for 1024 MB and 2048 MB but would fail when set to maximum (>3.3 GB) so please provide further information an how you determined your stable OC.

Thanks Panther X, it's Prime 95 stable for 15 min on all "8" cores. Just ran IBT @ 1024Mb and 2047Mb (said I couldn't do 2048). Here's a screenie of both runs:

I don't know if it could be more stable.....

Prime-stable proves that it won't crash when you run Windows plus IE but says nothing about running FAH. Run stresscpu2 which (unlike prime and more like FAH) loads up the SSE registers and the FPU.

Alot of people are having trouble with that particular WU there is a thread about it in these forums http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=15563

StressCPU2 has run for over 11/2 hr...... passed IBT x 2 (see post above), runs Prime95 perfectly ....gonna go look at Grandpa's thread...... (caintry pulls out more hair.....)

edit: well, from looking at that I may not have enough RAM (only 3Gb), but why can't I get kicked out to another server for a WU???

[12:17:29] - Attempt #4  to get work failed, and no other work to do.
Waiting before retry.

After a day and a half of "Attempting to get work packet", why won't it kick me out to another server for a WU???

Try changing the MACHINEID to a different number that is unique for that computer. i.e. it doesn't conflict with any other clients you may be running.

Well, I went back to the 6.29 client, and after grabbing a couple of 2682's that failed, I finally got a 2685 which is running fine.....*shrugs*, don't know what else to do, I wanna Fold, not Fail.

FYI, downgrading to v6.29 won't make any difference to what you fold because v6.29 and v6.30 use the same FahCore_a3 to process the WU. The only difference between them is the ease of installation and I just love that  I have been running v6.30 and so far completed 3 WUs (2 normal, 1 bigadv) and it hasn't given me any problems. (with v6.29, I had folded ~200 WUs including normal and bigadv)
The reason that 2682 failed is already mentioned in Grandpa_01's post above. I guess that it i due to you having 3 GB RAM. I currently have 4 GB so I am hoping that it is enough to run these WUs.
Normally, If I get "stuck" an a particular server, I would change the Machine ID, delete the queue.dat file and work folder. I would restart my Client a couple of times with different flags and usually, it works. I have this problem with my GPU Client so I do this but never had it with my SMP2 Client.
