5.91 and 5.92 deprecated but extended

Postby kasson » Thu Jul 31, 2008 11:08 pm

With the public beta release of the v6.22 SMP client, we encourage all our beta users to upgrade to that client. However, since the 5.91/5.92 beta expiration date is rapidly approaching, we have decided to extend those clients to allow users more time to upgrade (and to give us a little more time to work out the issues that invariably come up during public beta testing). Testing always uncovers bugs, which is why we do it. :)

So...
Drop-in binary replacements for 5.91 and 5.92 beta clients are available at:
http://www.stanford.edu/~kasson/folding ... MP-591.exe
http://www.stanford.edu/~kasson/folding ... MP-592.exe

These expire on 11-02-2008. However, 5.91/5.92 lack necessary features to support the new SMP cores we have in development. Depending on the core release and migration schedule, SMP A1 work units may not be available for the entirety of this three-month period. The extension of 5.91/5.92 is intended to ease the transition process to 6.22 rather than replace it entirely.

Thanks for testing!

As in the use of any beta software, please make sure to back up your hard drive before installing. DO NOT run a beta client if you or your machines cannot tolerate even the slightest instability or problems. Beta clients and servers performance may vary significantly from standard FAH clients during the development process, including but not limited to work unit shortages, server downtime for upgrades, and Points Per Day that differs a little or a lot from the developmental benchmark level.

Finally, note that while the points per day for these clients are higher than the classic client, they can require a lot more maintenance due to their experimental or beta nature. If you would prefer to have a client which runs as smoothly as possible, we suggest you run our main client, not a high performance client. If you run a high performance client, expect a much more complex experience and much more work to keep the client running (which is compensated by extra points per day).

I upgraded from v5.91 to 6.22 MPICH by replacing the executable. It took off and ran without a problem.

As an experiment for a team mate having trouble with the 6.22 MPICH full install, I tried switching mine back to v5.91 by just dropping in the extended 5.91 executable. It worked, but started the current WU over at 0%.

I replaced the copy of the 6.22 folder, and it picked up folding at the proper place.

This may be a way to allow people having problems to keep folding while doing more reading on the 6.22 client.
Proud to crash my machines as a Beta Tester!

Download the 6.22 client and then replace the v6 executable with the 5.9x executable. (v6 MPICH for 5.91 or v6 Deino for 5.92)
Folding whatever they send me since March 2006 :) Beta testing since October 2006. www.FAH-Addict.net Administrator since August 2009.

Given that this client expires in three weeks, what happens next;
- further extension of the 5.91/5.92?
- compulsory move be to the 6.22beta?
- release of a non-beta?

he means A2
@ Scary guy... A2 does not apply to Windows SMP yet.... just Linux for now, maybe Mac? ... Windows SMP still uses A1 Core.
