Re: New coronavirus variant

In Germany to protect against faster spreading Corona mutation B117, they start to wear FFP2/N95 masks mandatory next week. I have bought these masks for all of my extended family. They are said to filter out the virus at a high efficiency rate. I buy them on Amazon; shop around for the best price....

Re: New coronavirus variant

Scientists at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine have discovered a new variant of SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The new variant carries a mutation identical to the U.K. strain, but it likely arose in a virus strain already present in the United Sta...

Re: 16950 slowing down at the end

It does make it difficult to assign an appropriate number of points to all WUs in the project. True, that was another anomaly, but not one that I am worried about. I get concerned about "stuck" work units, which are prevalent on some projects. I have not seen them here though. If it is ju...

16950 slowing down at the end

I don't think that I have ever seen this before. But P16950 on my Ryzen 3950X (Ubuntu 18.04) started at TPF of 3 minutes, and is slowing down at the end to 30 minutes. I am wondering whether it will finish or not. 14:59:54:WU00:FS01:Connecting to 129.32.209.203:8080 15:00:12:WU02:FS01:Download 100.0...

Re: Isn't it time to tune down on COVID-19 projects?

But how do you know how it will mutate? Also, as I read their descriptions, they are trying to find parts of the virus that don't/can't change much and still be a coronavirus. So that is why I like this project. It could fill in where the vaccines, which may be more specific, leave off. Of course, ...

Re: Isn't it time to tune down on COVID-19 projects?

Apparently the world had the worst version of covid. The newer strains are less aggressive (though more contageous), and possibly work like a vaccine (in that most people just get a mild form of flu, and at the same time build up resistance to the heavier strain of Covid). Unfortunately not. The ne...

Re: COVID Moonshot - should it be left without saving lives?

If the Covid Moonshot finds a compound that it shown to work in an in vitro assay and is safe in animal testing, and can be synthesized in an economical way, then many drug companies can start clinical trials without paying for a patent. It would be ethical to credit the Covid Moonshot if they use ...

Re: New coronavirus variant

Then virus mutates and probably finds a way to workaround vaccine. Then we need new modified vaccine for next winter. That is why we need the anti-virals, to hold us between vaccines. If you engineer them properly, they will work on a broad range of viruses and not be restricted to a particular str...

Re: New coronavirus variant

South Africa has become the first country on the continent to register more than one million Covid-19 cases. It comes just days after authorities confirmed that a new, faster-spreading, coronavirus variant had been detected.

Probably never. It is more likely to be a recurring vaccination.
I have heard it said (maybe correctly) that the 1918 flu is still with us, just in mutated form that we can get vaccinated for.

Re: New faster-spreading COVID-19 variant effect current wor

I am putting more resources into COVID that it probably really warrants based on the known characteristics thus far. But with 100 million + cases around the world, if something can go wrong it probably will. And I think we need to build up the arsenal for dealing with new viruses (coronavirus or oth...
