Re: Switch preference to Parkinsons for highest PPD

My AMD Radeon 7900XTX strongly favors a particular series of parkinson WUs - it's the only project which gives even half decent performance for the wattage consumed (over 10M PPD at times with some of these WU - at 300-350+ watts consumed.) Previously I didn't favor any particular cause - it didn't ...

Re: AM5 thermals too high

I’ve been playing with BOINC with my CPU’s. It’s cpu control is a much needed improvement that F@H should adopt. I last ran BOINC ten years ago at least, I don't really remember anymore. But at the time, you could set CPU usage as a percentage, and it was actually really accurate. That always fasci...

Best practices for CPU folding on dual-CCD AMD Ryzen 3000/5000/7000 series

Since 12 and 16 core Ryzen CPUs have dual CCDs/chiplets, is it generally recommended to divide available CPU cores into two CPU folding slots with >16 threads each (multithreading enabled, of course) or not...? Windows 11 OS, by the way. Perhaps particularly with 12 or 16-core Ryzen 7000-series X3D ...

Also, with that kind of a setup, a direct connection to a hydroelectric dam I assume. ;)

Re: Apple TV app

The client downloads executable code to run work units. Apple will not approve such apps. If the cores appear as DLC in the app store, I don't see why they wouldn't approve it. It's no different than any number of other apps. ...Naturally, an Apple TV app might not be the most useful thing though. ...

Yeah, that is absolutely friggen insane.

More than 8.5x a R7900XTX... Why is AMD performance so absolutely abysmal in comparison to NV in FaH? It's really depressing.

Re: 4070ti low power usage...

I have run a quite few other cards and have never noticed this behavior before. Usually a card with no power limit runs at 100% of power while folding. Power useage behavior is not an exact science, this can/does vary between different pieces of hardware and the particular loads you run on them. As...

Re: Raptor Lake folding - i9-13900K

I experimented with setting the cpu to 8, 16 and 20 and didn't see any real difference in performance. You should see most performance when limiting the number of threads to fit your P-cores only. As FaH overall performance is capped by the performance of your slowest CPU core, you don't want to sh...

Re: New Folding Hardware

What exactly is FaH using all this PCIe bandwidth for? CPU usage when GPU folding is absolutely negligible, at least on AMD platform - one or two percent of one CPU thread is what I'm typically seeing.

Re: RTX 4090 is getting 26M PPD

This is the memory latency effect. Latency between CPU and main/system memory is probably 65-75ns (depending). Latency between GPU and its memory is usually higher, 100ns?, because the special memory used is designed for high bandwidth, not lower latency. FaH only uses a small fraction of the GPU m...

Re: 85% TDP Throttling Question

I have no problem with wear at that rate - small price to pay, but it's a question (more like comment) that I often get when I introduce folding to others... "huh, how long will my video card survive?!" The video card itself will generally live much longer than its attached fans, if using...

Re: 85% TDP Throttling Question

Generally "no" I would say, and particularly in case of GPUs, as there's no software-side throttle as such on them - when they go, they go, at whatever speed they're configured to go at. We have some knobs and levers to turn in the driver control panels these days (power limit in particula...

Future of OpenCL vs. Vulkan and F@H?

With OCL becoming increasingly deprecated and outdated, is there any roadmap for migrating GPU F@H cores towards Vulkan instead for non-Nvidia GPUs?

Re: Alder Lake results

The fun part of being a beta-tester for Intel: assigning a 22-thread task to all P-Cores and 1 E-Core results in F@H running on just ONE SINGE E-Core and all P-Cores idling.   Dayum. I was hoping it would have handled that situation better! Alder Lake's probably not ideal for F@H du...

Re: Alder Lake results

This is interesting, my 9700X folding at 17 threads and a nosehair under 4GHz all cores/165W package TDP (any more and it hits upwards of 95C on air cooling and likely phantom throttles - it runs 88-90C as it is typically), and manages between 220k and 300k roughly depending on the work unit. One wo...
