Re: Electrical Costs

I'm in So Cal too and when I had 3+ 8 core systems running, my bill was over $300. I had to stop using the big screen TV's etc. If I had to questimate, I'd say it costs around $60 per month per system.

Re: 16 Cores of Opteron?

I have found alot of older AMD Opterons on Ebay at decent prices lately. The only problem is that alot of them are either single or dual core Opterons. I think I may have saw a couple quad core opterons at decent prices in the listings but, I could have been mistaken or the price was a little highe...

Re: Do Laptops Get Too Hot?

 I have a laptop cooler but it's too much of a hassle to use so I finally settled on a food tray for $2 like they use in a cafeteria. It's nice and flat and depending on size of laptop/tray, may have room for optical mouse. Also if I use it on my lap, it's a lot more comfortable. You...

Re: Do Laptops Get Too Hot?

As with all laptops, they need frequent cleaning and need to be on a surface that doesn't restrict airflow. As for getting too hot, that would be dependent on the model you get. I'm sure the fan will kick into overdrive if you fold on it on every core. Other than the noise, again depending on the mo...

Re: Is it just me or are the Stats not updating?

My fastest bigadv box hung while transmitting on 11-12. Found out 2 days later and had to manually power off. At least it didn't lose WU but was able to transmit 6 hours after restarting folding. Lost half the bonus points plus downtime. Remote system has points every 3 days except for 11-12. Though...

Re: Folding on a 486

Hey what about the 386's? I remember when the 286 was a quantum leap vs the 8086. The first desktop/networked computers I worked with were Datapoint based on the 8008 in the mid 70's. The first mini--HP 2000 and mainframe--IBM 360 in the early 70's. Now I'm feeling my age. http://foldi...

Re: Low points?

Are you familiar with the -oneunit parameter? SMP requires linux, Mac OS, or VMware.

EDIT:

Sorry--mistated, not requires but better performance. Not all that familiar with VMware either.

Re: Suggestion: download new WU before current one finishes

The delay would be about 2 minutes, miniscule compared to 72 hours for the WU. The 12-45+ minutes gained would increase production 1-2%. Not a lot but wasted opportunity none the less.

Re: Suggestion: download new WU before current one finishes

If concurrent connections is the problem. Maybe Stanford could look into considering offsite hosting of their result servers where they have higher capacity. The aggregated results could then can be uploaded with high speed bursts back to Stanford as appropriate. Maybe you could get some site to don...

Re: Suggestion: download new WU before current one finishes

I have 256Kbs upload speed on DSL. It takes 45 mins to upload -bigadv results according to my logs. Download speed is 3Mbps and takes 2 mins 15secs. According to the logs, nothing is done in parallel. That's fine for the uniprocessor clients but isn't very efficient for smp, especially for huge WU's...

WU bad checkpoint, deleted from queue.

Project 2681, Run 1/Clone 16/Gen 25 After 24hrs, I shutdown system to relocate. Upon reboot, checkpoint caused abort and attempted to send results. Result file had corrupt length and was deleted from queue. This WU needs to be reassigned. Never had a problem restarting after shutdown/restart before....

Re: List of SMP WUs with the "1 core usage" issue

Got 2671 (Run 37,Clone 79,Gen 78) on list, downloaded Aug 22, due Aug 25--Frame time 1hr 5min.

Should have completed my 10 WU's by now to qualify for -bigadv. Prior frame times were well under 4 min.

Update:

Got 2671 (Run 37,Clone 79,Gen 78) again--talk about a bad penny...
