Re: Working on Giving Russians Opium May Alter Current Situa

True, but Stanford is going to continue to be vigilant about security. Yeah, and I doubt most hackers would possess the skills to break into it even if they tried. Why do hackers write viruses? That's about like the famous question about why would someone want to climb Mount Everest . . . "Bec...

Re: Working on Giving Russians Opium May Alter Current Situa

Why would hackers try to compromise FAH servers? They can't issue updates to FAHClient or FAHControl, and as far as I know there is no backdoor in them, so all compromising the servers could do would be to give out bogus work units. I suppose a hacker could use an advanced technique like a buffer ov...

Re: GeForce GTX 675M not detected under Linux

The thing I'm wondering isn't "is this GPU supported?", it's "why isn't this GPU even detected?"

Re: GeForce GTX 675M not detected under Linux

I've heard that Nvidia cards are capable of doing this, but I don't think ATIs can. I just got a new computer with Nvidia (replacing the HP Pavilion that had the AMD), but it has a very new GPU that came out just this April, and the nouveau driver for it sucks. And there isn't a proprietary driver ...

But they can be used through Wine some of the time.

Re: Future of F@H: folding speed and protein size

Hardware has improved rapidly. but the 10n, 10µs 10ms, 10s(?) scale is phenomenal. I wonder what part of that isn't just hardware. (Better software, more people doing FAH, etc.) I wonder that as well, but I expect most power is coming from the software advances, because hardware is still getting be...

GeForce GTX 675M not detected under Linux

I finally got to setting up my new computer, a MainGear gaming laptop. It has a single nVidia GeForce GTX 675M GPU and (because I'm running Linux) it uses the nouveau driver. On my old Linux computer, which has an AMD Radeon HD 6770M GPU, I could never figure out how to get it to fold using Wine, ho...

Re: many influenza WU

Remember, folding one protein can help even with unrelated ones as new things are learned about protein folding. So folding hemagglutinin (an influenza membrane protein) may actually assist in the study of the folding of p53 (a protein involved in cancer). So it's not like folding mostly virus-relat...

Re: What about checkpoints?

It has been a while since I tried a Linux install in a VM, so no idea where current clients stick the work directory. At one time they used similar paths to what is used for OS X, but that may have changed. Ah okay then I'll find it one day lol For the *buntus, it is in the folder ".FAHClient&...

Re: Why are you folding?

I fold because it's the only way I can help medical science progress even when I'm not doing anything. I have a decent laptop, and a powerful desktop (and in about a week I'll be getting a kick-ass MainGear computer), and I just don't feel right leaving them off all the time (or at least idle). All ...

Re: F@h & scientists boost potency of cancer-treating protei

But isn't IL-2 the cytokine that causes that crappy feeling you get when you're sick? I think it affects the brain and makes us sluggish and nauseous to prevent us from being active and using up energy that otherwise could be used to fight off infection. Hopefully this artificial version won't do t...

Re: Is folding based on BOINC?

Well, maybe it's based on BOINC in that they're both used in distributed computing, but FAH doesn't use any (as far as I know) of BOINC's software.

Re: Project: 6097 (Run 0, Clone 40, Gen 132) running twice

You can't start a second WU within the same directory because they'd try to use the same file names and you would guarantee corruption. You can run another client/slot because they'd be running in another directory. Coordinating the two would be a nightmare. The expert on what might be called the e...

Re: Project: 6097 (Run 0, Clone 40, Gen 132) running twice

For large WUs, I've seen reports of it taking two hours to close the files. There's a long topic on the subject: foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=17972 Okay, thank you. And just a question, if it takes so long but doesn't use much CPU, would it be possible for a second WU to start at that ...
