Re: server 128.143.199.97 offline

We're making some progress on this server. If all goes well, we might be up within the next day. (At one point, it was looking like a total loss, so this is very good news.)

server 128.143.199.97 offline

We've taken 128.143.199.97 offline due to a RAID failure. We're doing our best to restore function. No ETA at this time, unfortunately.

Re: Missing credit for 3 x P8106?

We ran a recredit yesterday and also corrected the stats scripts for all remaining returns.

Indeed--there were several different recredits processed yesterday.

Re: 128.143.231.201 bigadv out of work

We've added some bigadv jobs (~200 as of this evening, likely more to come). Hopefully this will alleviate the shortage.

(I'm sure everyone remembers, but bigadv EOL is planned for Jan 31, 2015. We will do our best to keep jobs available until then, though.)

Re: 128.143.231.201 (BA) acting up?

Ok, we fixed the root cause (a bunch of bad work units). The work server has a "feature" where it will resend prior assignments without checking if the work unit was stopped. So you may see some reassigns until this clears out. But there shouldn't be any 512-byte new assigns.

Re: 128.143.231.201 (BA) acting up?

I'm not sure what's going on. I'm going to take the server down until we can investigate properly.

Unauthorized is the intended response when manually visiting this server. I'm not sure why your work unit did not upload; other work units are successfully uploading at this time. You might check your network connection.

Re: Change in BA requirements

We understand that donors may decide to redirect their priorities. We are thankful for all donations that people have made in the past. On a separate note, there has been a fair amount of discussion about ways to make the points system (and large work units) more consistent and predictable for donor...

Re: Any Affects of Gene Patent on F@H?

You're both right :). Typically if you work for a US university and you come up with something patentable, the patent belongs to the University (but the inventor receives some compensation if the patent generates royalties). That said, many US Universities give professors the option to place discove...

Re: Change in BA requirements

Thank you for the suggestions. I need to consult with the rest of the F@H leadership, but I think the likelihood is that we'll want to move sooner rather than later. I should also point out that one could equally conclude that BA work units are overvalued rather than that SMP are undervalued. A numb...

Re: Change in BA requirements

The idea of BA in the first place was indeed for these "extra-demanding" work units where 1) speed is important because the systems we simulate are larger/slower, so we need more computation to get useful results and 2) the larger nature of the simulation meant an increased use of system r...

Re: Change in BA requirements

The conversation about what the role of BA is in the project is a good one to have. The BA program has been of particular scientific benefit to my research group, but the FAH project as a whole has needed to position BA within a broad range of scientific needs. Data that helped inform where to place...

Re: Change in BA requirements

We do pay attention to feedback. We may not respond, but we do listen. We appreciate that this is a complicated problem. And we appreciate the participation of all of our FAH donors.

Upcoming changes to bigadv threshold

We have a policy of periodically re-evaluating the bigadv program, including the threshold required to run bigadv projects. It is the intent of bigadv to match large and resource-intensive work units with some of the most powerful machines used by FAH donors. This "most powerful" line natu...
