The directions given above - viewtopic.php?f=105&t=36147&view=unread#p343291 - are basically what I would post. Only change I would make is if you have more than one folding slot would to delete the folder inside the "work" folder that is numbered the same as the WU being processed.

I can confirm that after I set one of my clients, which previously had the "failing" a8 core/project, back to "All" projects, when it completed the WU, it did get another a7 WU from 17201.

Thanks, Joe_H! I followed the steps posted by SilvioMartin and my Mac is now folding away. :D

Follow up: My Windows 7.0 system has the new a8 update [with a 16810 WU], so I'll be spot checking it.

SilvioMartin wrote:@belloq: I was just about to report the same issue. Here is how I got my client going:

1. Pause all slots
2. Close FAHControl
3. Delete the content of /Library/Application Support/FAHClient/work (you need admin rights for that)
4. Reboot your Mac
5. Launch FAHControl
6. Fold

This is not a permanent cure. Your FAH client will get stuck again the next time, when a work unit of project 16810 is assigned to your computer. I tried to reduce the chance by setting the cause preference to some other than COVID-19 (button Configure on top left, then tab Advanced). Not sure if this has a big effect. After setting to Cancer this morning my FAHClient got stuck twice again.
You don't need to reboot your Mac. That's a thing that Windows users do. On a Mac you just halt the client, delete the work unit, and restart the client, like so (assuming you know how to use a command-line terminal):

Stop the client:

Code: Select all

sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.foldingathome.fahclient.plist
Then delete the work unit, e. g. (depending on which slot has the offending WU):

Code: Select all

sudo rm /Library/Application\ Support/FAHClient/work/01/wudata_01.dat
Then restart the client:

Code: Select all

sudo launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.foldingathome.fahclient.plist
It's a lot faster and it won't interrupt any of your other work.

Also, closing and reopening FAHControl is unnecessary.

Cheers,
HG

SilvioMartin's fix worked for me (see quote below), although I hadn't read Hopfgeist's addendum by then.

One thing that I would note for other technical numpties like me is that the path to the work folder is:

/Library/Application Support/FAHClient/work

and not

~/Library/Application Support/FAHClient/work

I initially deleted the second and, unsurprisingly, it made no difference! If you delete the work folder and do not get asked for admin permission so to do then check that you are following the correct path! I feel a bit stupid! :e(

Nevertheless, I'm Folding again after 24 hours of stalling. I only noticed because MiniUsage was showing low CPU use overall whereas it normally runs at 100% if F@H is running correctly.

Incidentally, my Profile kit description doesn't seem to have updated [yet] so I am now running and iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017), 3.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 64 GB 2400 MHz DDR4, 2TB HD running under macOS Catalina v10.15.6 (19G2021)

It probably won't be much use now that the problem has been identified, if not yet resolved, but here - just in case - is my "recovery log".

Code: Select all

Usually I follow the KISS principle and post the simplest instructions that will fix the problem. I have too many counter examples where exact instructions needed to be followed at the command line and persons did it slightly different. Some are here on the forum.
Also, closing and reopening FAHControl is unnecessary.
True, I missed that one unnecessary step in my prior comments. Though it doesn't hurt anything in the process.

Stop the client:

Code: Select all

sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.foldingathome.fahclient.plist
Then delete the work unit, e. g. (depending on which slot has the offending WU):

Code: Select all

sudo rm /Library/Application\ Support/FAHClient/work/01/wudata_01.dat
Then restart the client:

Code: Select all

sudo launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.foldingathome.fahclient.plist
I just use these steps for a single CPU processing system:
  1. Open the HD and go to Library/Application Support/FAHClient/work
Delete the "01" folder as that's usually the one its failing to work on. You will be prompted for admin user/pass to trash it
Open Terminal and paste this and hit enter:

    Code: Select all

    FAHClient --send-command shutdown

The hints of belloq and Joe_H helped, thank you !

Yes, I am. But quite new to FAH, so I didn't yet have to deal with FAH command line. So I just started my personal FAH FAQ.

Me, too. I didn't know about the client upgrade, so I downloaded and installed 7.6.13 on to my 2017 5k Retina iMac running the very latest Catalina (10.15.7) that showed up this week, and got it started, to no avail. I've paused the unit and I'll check back here in a couple of days to see if there's something more that I can do. In the meanwhile, appended below is my log - the message at the bottom repeats every minute:

Re: I seem to have received a bad _a8 core update [OS X]

Post by PantherX »

Please note that the issue has been resolved. You will need to:
Exit the client
Delete the /Library/Application Support/FAHClient/work folder
/Library/Application Support/FAHClient/cores folder
Start up the client so that it will get a new WU with the correct FahCore_a8 version

If that doesn't work, please report back with a new set of log files :)

Admin: Thanks for unblocking me (see my email at 0918 BST (0818 GMT/UTC). I still don't know why I was banned for spamming (falsely for the second time recently) but thanks for the speedy resolution.

But on to business.

I appear still to be running v7.6.9, how do I update to the latest version - or do I not need so to do? i can't se a reference on here as to how to update and then, going forward, ensure that I am always up-to-date.

it would be nice if the update process were automatic (if it isn't already) for those of us who don't understand the technical side and who thus leave well alone.

As far as PantherX's suggestion is concerned, I shall let the current unit finish (14800 (308, 9, 22)) and then carry out those update steps.

My signature still hasn't updated so for information I am running an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017), 3.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 64 GB 2400 MHz DDR4, 2TB HD running under macOS Catalina v10.15.7 (19G2021)
