Doesn't run at all, just throws an error

Post by the2048 »

I recently installed FAH to be greeted with nothing when it tries to launch it through the installer (from a fresh re-install). When it is run from the Desktop, I get the error "HideConsole.exe is not a valid Win32 application". Yes, I made sure it was x86. Upon running the client itself, I get "FAHClient.exe is not a valid Win32 application". Running FAHConfig just throws a massive error with something about Python, mingw32, and unable to load DLLs.
Help a (rather new) folder out.

Did you do a default installation (potentially with name/team/passkey added) or if not, how did you modify the installation?

Is this Windows/Linux/MacOS-X? (presumably Windows) and is it a 32-bit or 64-bit OS?

There's a log which you can find following the instructions below which would be very helpful.

This is a default install. Haven't even created a team, name, or passkey.
It's a Windows install, and it is 32bit. I'll check the log.
Edit: There's no log. There's a themes folder and a sample-config XML file.

I guess that makes sense. Your installed version didn't do enough processing to create a log.

I didn't ask if it was winXP/Win7/Win8/ or Win10.

Support of 32-bit Windows has either ended or soon will end. Perhaps FAH's installer has installed a 64-bit version which cannot be run on a 32-bit OS. I'll have to get back to you on what can or cannot be done on your system.

Installer says in the file name it's x86. Could be an x86-64 (amd64) binary. Then again this is latest, and people have issues with the latest. I'll try 7.4.4 which'll hopefully work.

Right. I noticed that .... and x86 is commonly refers to 32-bit code, but the message *.exe is not a valid Win32 application might indicate otherwise.

Got the same problem.

fah-installer_7.5.1_x86.exe doesn't seem to work for Windows XP SP3, with NET2.0 and 2008 C++ Redistributable (32 bit) as per description (only says version 7 though).

Get the "not valid Win32 error" on all exes basically - one of them tried to run python scripts from C:/build/... yada yada - when there's not even anysuch directory there (nor anywhere else).

Seems that version is for 32-bit Windows 10 (only?).

Is there an older v7 that actually runs on Windows XP? Have a few of these, thought they could be useful.
I'll keep looking, seems it should be available somewhere, would suck however to get some fake version and start making bitcoins instead for some hacker.

EDIT
Found:
https://download.foldingathome.org/rele ... -xp-32bit/
So I'm up and running but not much action, not sure I can do anything about it, will wait and see:

Your HD 6570 is not support for GPU folding, the projects that ran on GPUs with only SP support finished last year. All current GPU projects require both SP and DP support. Earliest AMD GPUs usable would be the HD 5800 and HD 6900 series, some cards in the later series also do not have DP support and can't be used.

My understanding is that once the last Core_A4 projects finished last year, Win XP became unsupported for folding. The current CPU core, Core_A7, requires libraries not available in Win XP, I think the minimum is Vista or Win 7. The GPU folding cores also require 64-bit Windows as I recall, but I could be remembering that wrong.
