[FIXED:Install Intel DCH driver]F@h crashes after 30 seconds

Post by undergroundmusic »

Hello everyone. I'll explain everything as simple as possible: Folding starts, fetches everything OK, CPU works, GPU works, but after that, 30 seconds on, the folding client crashes.

Specs:
Dell Inspiron laptop with i5 7300HQ and GTX 1050 Ti. Using 7.5.1. Windows 10 Enterprise 1809 (might be a problem with 1809?)

I know that on (nearly) the same platform the older versions worked, but at this point it's unclear what I should try else, so I'm sticking with this latest(?) one. Is there any beta available? What else can I try?

The log in Roaming doesn't seem to say anything, sorry if I don"t provide good enough information with other debuggers and stuff.

Re: F@h crashes after 30 seconds

Post by bruce »

there's a high probability that your system is overheating. You may need better airflow through the case or more fans or other changes that can keep the CPU and/or the GPU within their normal temperature ranges.
NOTE: 30 seconds ia about right for the temperature to increase to the point that the system shuts down to protect itself from damage.

Make sure all the fans are turning at reasonable speeds. Clean the dust out of the narrow passages in the heat-sinks. Check the case filters (if present). Consider leaving the case open. Etc.

If it's the CPU that's overheating, you may need to replace the silicon grease connecting the heatsink to the CPU body.

FAH does make your system work harder than most other apps, so there's more heat generated but a well designed case should be able to handle full load.

You may want to disable either CPU or GPU slot in FAH to see which one makes trouble.

Okay that's a little weird. I tried disabling one of each slot (only cpu and only gpu), still crashes after that amount of time. But for whatever reason the fahcore still remains on until I kill it: https://ctrlv.cz/tJEP

All temps are under 75 C all of the time. I tried selecting only 1 cpu thread, so the temperature is very low like 47 C, still crashes.

I tried removing the CPU undervolt and GPU overclock to no avail. Everything seems rock stable on this... portable machine :)

Drivers all have their latest versions, including nVidia gpu and the bios.

It's strage. Please tell me about any other logs/info I can provide. Thank you

Also, I see that the CPU slot is set to use only one thread ... I think it would be better to remove it. Or make a choice : run GPU slot only, or run CPU slot only (but using all 4 threads of the CPU).

Can you post a screenshot of the client crash ?

Hmm actually that was the GPU core consuming 25% cpu... Kinda high I think.

Here's a video, I tried first with GPU only then with CPU only, all settings default. Hope the Threads bar in processhacker was saying something.
While the GPU temps were OK, the CPU did hover around 80 C, but there was no thermal throttling or frequency reduction, so it was running okay.

The GPU driver (including OpenCL) is designed by NVidia and uses 100% of one CPU thread. You'll have to talk to them about that.

It seems that something kills the client ... can you tell us about what security software you're using ?

Can you look in Windows Reliability Monitor if something is logged for FAHClient.exe when it exits ?

I'm not using any security software, Windows Defender is also disabled because sometimes it's a little too paranoid : - ) Windows Reliability Monitor just listed drivers, nothing linked to apps.
But indeed, it looks like it gets killed. I tried things like messing around with priority and process settings but no success.
I tried older v7.4.xx versions, same thing happens to them too.

Kinda ran out of options based on my not so good knowledge : - )

What other logging software can I use to list something useful about these crashes?

In your video there is a process svchost.exe running 25% CPU. Is this only a Windows 10 background service active (why?) or is your system infected by some virus (don't want to scare you)? Maybe activating Windows Defender to check that?

Re: (Solved) F@h crashes after 30 seconds

Post by undergroundmusic »

Yeah just like with other things related to Windows, I had to reinstall Windows :) but this time using the "mainstream" Pro version instead of Enterprise.

Now folding is rock stable.

Thanks everyone!

What the problem apparently was is a combination of firewall rules being broken and Enterprise being more slimmed down and missing some components I think. I didn't had any viruses or whatever but strangely now the CPU usage is also lower with only using GPU slot. Good PPD and everything with the 1050ti! 180K

Re: [UPDATE: KB4467708 is to blame] F@h crashes after 30 sec

Post by undergroundmusic »

BIG UPDATE!!!!!!!! the KB4467708(+KB4464455) update is causing these crashes, as soon as it updated the crashes returned. I uninstalled the update and now it's stable again.

Where to report this?

Edit: Crap, right after another restart Windows automatically installed KB4464455, which cannnot be uninstalled unlike KB4467708, the crashes returned, I can't fold again :(

At least I pinpointed the cause

KB4467708 actually got installed first, KB4464455 being listed as security update in my PC after removing it, it has a similar changelog:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... -kb4467708

This one's absolutely to blame. After another restart it got put back indefinitely.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the fix for "Addresses an issue that may cause applications to lose IPv4 connectivity when IPv6 is unbound." was incorrectly fixed. It doesn't seem logical, though.

If so, it's strange that fixing something actually broke it. FAH requires IPV4 and Microsoft has decided that IPV6 is required -- and this has broken FAH before. We'll have to wait and see what they say when the next updates come down.
