Linux - Poor desktop performance while folding with GPU

Postby Azsorlex26 » Wed Apr 08, 2020 5:18 am

My folding hardware consists of a 2600k and a GTX1060. When I first started folding, I was able to fold at full speed while doing light tasks on my computer such as web browsing, video streaming, and even light gaming without much noticeable interference. However due to technical difficulties, I had to reinstall my system. The distro I used before the reinstall and am currently using is Pop!_OS 19.10. I got CPU and GPU folding back online, but when I fold with the GPU, I find it near impossible to use my desktop to do anything. Why could this be? What could've changed? Please help me out.

Nevermind. I figured it out.

Firstly there was a fix I used from here: ( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV ... en_tearing ) to combat screen tearing. Removing the "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" and "TrippleBuffer" lines improved general desktop performance (it isn't perfect, but I'm not complaining).

Secondly, Firefox had its own problem. To make it work well again, I set "layers.acceleration.force-enabled" to be true (instructions here: ( https://www.reddit.com/r/SolusProject/c ... earing_in/ )). I initially had this fix in place to combat tearing in streamed videos.

Welcome to the F@H Forum Azsorlex26,

There's another setting in Firefox which might help... disable hardware acceleration. It might be in other programs like media players, etc. Disabling hardware acceleration will cause the application to use CPU to render the screen instead of the GPU. Since CPUs can multitask way more efficiently than a GPU, this will help improve your user experience on the system while folding.
