How to keep FAH from running when I'm working (OS X)

Post by Smashprod »

I have two Mac Pros with a total of 18 cores between them that I use for audio work. I would like to install FAH on them as I'm not working a lot right now due to the virus. But when I do my audio work I don't want anything running in the background. Can I make a new User Account (running OS X High Sierra) and install FAH from that account? If I did that, would it only run when that account is logged in?

Welcome to the F@H Forum Smashprod,

First option would be you install the F@H Software as normal and it will fold on your CPU. When you're doing audio work, you can use Advanced Control (AKA FAHControl) to pause the CPU slot and it will stop within a minute. After that, you are free to do audio work. Once done, you can then unpause the CPU Slot and it will resume from the last checkpoint.

Second option would be similar to the above but instead of pausing and unpausing the CPU slot, you ensure that the CPU slot only folds when the system is idle.

Please note that the folding process for CPU is at a low priority so most of the time, you can use your system as normal and it won't make a difference. You may want to experiment with allowing the CPU to fold in the background and process the audio to see if there is any measurable impact or not.

Use Activity Monitor to check CPU usage - keep this app visible on Desktop to see Audio app usage vs FahCore_a7 CPU usage.

Thanks PantherX-- I tried pausing and it indeed works perfectly. Activity Monitor showed the CPU usage dropped down to insignificant. I'm going to set up my audio computers.
