Windows Folding client not rotating WU servers

Post by lafrad »

I've got a Windows Threadripper machine with a 2080Ti and 2070 Super (main PC, gaming, content creation when not folding) and a Linux i5-2500K with a 1080 & GTX980 in it.
The linux machine is almost always getting work units, and rotating through the WU servers for the GPU's and CPU regularly. The Windows PC is NOT. It will sit and hammer the same two empty WU servers for *hours* without trying a different one, remaining idle.
I can see this behavior in my SQUID logs on my home network too... the windows PC just never picks a new server.

is there any way to persuade the WIndows client to rotate when it doesn't find work? I'd much rather have the big system cranking through these tasks as fast as it can vs the older system slowly being busy all the time...

Those two servers the client is connecting to are not Work Servers but Assignment Servers. They do not hand out WUs, but direct your client to a WS that lists having available connections and WUs of the right type for your system.

If you post the first 200 lines or so of your log file, people here can take a look at it to see if there is a configuration problem.

Of course after messing with it all day, I go to get some new clean logs and I got Work Units... It still seems fishy that the windows machine has a much harder time to get work, as its trying more often and sitting idle for far longer amounts of time... but it is what it is I guess...

Thanks for taking the time to check it out. (I snipped a bit of info out, but it's obviously working as its doing stuff...)

Re: Windows Folding client not rotating WU servers

Welcome to the F@H Forum lafrad,

I noticed few things:
1) next-unit-percentage by default is 99% and you have changed that. Please note that it would negatively impact your bons points since the total time to process the WU (started from when it is downloaded from the Server to when it is uploaded to the Server) is increased.
2) I would suggest that you try a single CPU Slot of 16 or 24. If you want multiple slots, use these values instead; 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16. I would avoid using 10 since it's a multiple of 5 which may or may not bode well for the WU.

I'm far less interested in points and far more interested in getting work for the fast GPUs to be saturated. The 2080TI and 2070 Super churn though the work very quickly, and chances are they will return the result before the average GPU's out in the field... More work gets done the less they are idle. The percentages I have chosen has given the COVID style work units about 5-15 minutes "head start" to have a WU waiting when the previous one finishes, so it has cut down the time it ends up waiting (after completion) to get another one (less idle time). I'm not doing this for the slower GPUs/CPU in my other PC. (I have tried to adjust that/go back to default, no change in how much the windows machine gets its work).

I haven't had any issues getting work for the 10 and 12 thread CPU slots... I haven't seen any errors or warnings... is it possible its causing trouble for the server? Otherwise, I've found this setup to leave the system feel like its unloaded for day-to-day use, and I can pause the 10 thread slot to go play a game and not feel any real impact on FPS (and enable it again when I'm done)....

As long as you don't have any errors or "domain decompostion" errors when using 10 CPUs, you're good. The Servers won't be impacted by the number of CPUs you're folding with. They will try to allocate the best possible WU for your hardware. Glad that you have found the optimum folding configuration for your system :)
