FahMon problem (absolute noob apologetic already)

Post by WacoJohn »

Not sure I am in the right forum. Not sure I am in the right topic. Pretty lost. I apologize for what I don't know.

System:
Xubuntu 9.10
Compaq Presario 700MHz Celeron Coppermine
512MB Memory 128KB L2 Cache
Free space 5.2G
NVidia GeForce2 MX 100/200 Video Ram 32 MB
Up 24/7

Installed "Origami" 0.7-0ubuntu1 ... not sure I installed the right one or how to find out. Found it in Package Manager. I am a member of a folding 'team'.
Installed "FahMon" 2.3.99.1

That is about all I know. Am assuming it is working though with some indications, maybe not.

FahMon default screen:
Progress: 4% Name: Folding ETA: 3d 02h 13mn PPD: 23.07 Core: Gromacs PRCG: P6503 (R5, C629,G2) Credit: 75 points Downloaded: 3h 44mn ago Deadline: 13d 20h 12mn

FAHLOG looks OK.

I guess I am contributing something, but this doesn't look good to me:

run fahmon as admin... Well atleast with windows you have to...

But it is running correctly.

go and open the actual log file, it should read proper.

I don't run in that environment but FanMon is a 3rd party tool supported by it's author and he's probably the only one that can help you. FAH will run just fine if you shut it down and presumably that will get rid of the error messages -- or you can just ignore them.

I do like FahMon but there are other 3rd party tools that you can use to monitor your progress -- or you can learn to decipher the information from FAHlog. I don't have a good recommendation for your environment, though.

I'll move your post to the right forum.

Thank you, all for the kind replies. I find some good resources within. It seems I need to post my original post in a Linux forum of some sort .. and I will try to find one. I will continue this thread in case someone has some specific comments but want to thank you for your replies.

I had to look up Origami. :)

I don't use Ubuntu, (use Slackware) but this could be a permission problem not a FahMon problem.

How are you running FahMon? From your own user account?

Can you post a directory listing of /var/lib/origami/foldingathome/CPU1/work/?

Open a terminal and issue the command (and post the results.):
ls -l /var/lib/origami/foldingathome/CPU1/work/
Image
Folding on Slackware Linux.

I am thinking everything is OK because those errors came from the FAHMON VIEW "LOG" .. but after running for a few days, the log does NOT show those errors .. just data of successful cycles. It may be I was viewing the log before FAHMON got fully initialized or at some point where it was doing normal 'errors'. FAHMON LOG looks 'pretty good to me' at this point.

Actually here is the log view as of tonight. Those errors appeared right after I installed it. I think I just jumped the gun in viewing the log .. if that makes any sense. Thank you all for your valuable time.:

Re: FahMon problem (absolute noob apologetic already)

OH .. I cannot access /var/lib/origami/foldingathome/CPU1/work/ I can drill down to CPU1 but listing /work gives access denied. Yes, running FAHMON from my account.

Yes indeed based on your FAHlog.txt folding is working just like it should. So lets tackle the problem with FahMon.

You should at least be able to see that work directory.

What are the permissions for the /var/lib/origami/foldingathome/CPU1/ directory. Can you do a:

ls -l /var/lib/origami/foldingathome/CPU1/

and then do:

sudo ls -l /var/lib/origami/foldingathome/CPU1/work/

Based on what I have read about Origami, it should show owner as origami and group as users, users should have read permission.

Oh one point of advice, when posting logs or listings it is best to place them between code blocks such as this
paste the log text here
In my next post I will give an example.

Perfectly. :D

Well it is definitely permissions that is causing the problems with FahMon. The owner and group permissions are OK. The problem lies in the group, which is currently nogroup. Folding@home works OK because that is what it expects. FahMon on the other hand cannot read the files it need. The easiest and simplest solution is to simply add your user to the group nogroup.

The other would be to change the group for the /var/lib/origami/foldingathome/ directory and it's subdirectories to users.

To add your user name to the group nogroup:

sudo usermod -aG nogroup LOGIN

Where LOGIN is your user name.
