Post by OzPapaSmurf »

Hi there, I have just today joined the forum though I have been folding for some time.
I live in Australia and I belong to a Car forum where there are a few of us folding away daily.

I am running the new 6.29 SMP and also the 6.23 GPU client. Today I learned about the
passkey thing so I went and acquired me one of them and have added it to my 3 working
clients for some extra points. :D
I didn't start this for points but rather in memory of my Father and Sister who both succumbed
to the dreaded cancer monster and this is my small way of trying to help others in same boat. :)

You won't necessarily get extra points with just a passkey. To get extra points, you need to be using the SMP client with Passkey with either -bigadv (at least 8 cores and running Linux) or -advmethods parameters and run 24x7 and have a quad core or better machine. So there really is a lot more to getting more points than just adding a passkey. Those extra points come mainly from returning the work units quickly which is why you really need a fast machine running 24x7.

Technically speaking, dual- and tri-core machines are capable of earning some bonus points, but only in a pretty much dedicated environment and certainly running 24x7.

Welcome, OzPapaSmurf.
You can earn bonus points on those weaker machines but that is because the base is so low compared to a1/a2's but that doesn't mean you are getting extra points. The A3's were designed so as to be equivalent to a stock Q6600 running an A2 on 24x7. So with those duals and tri's, you may be getting bonus but are you getting as many points?

My Core2Duo T2060 laptop @1.6 GHz earns more points with SMP2 than it does with two classic clients. The difference is quite small, so when I go on a trip and it won't be running 24x7 with a live connection I switch to two clients, but it spends a lot of time just folding here at home.

My Intel dual-core E6400 and E3200 CPUs both make more ppd with a3 WUs than with a2 WUs.
My AMD dual-core 4850E CPU makes less ppd with a3 WUs than with a2 WUs.

Thanks for the welcome, I do run my machines 24/7 and like I said, I am not looking for
glory just want to make the max impact with the current machinery.
In the future there is a quad core and also maybe a nice new GT 470 coming? :D
