Power Requirements

Post by Phantom2487 »

I'm looking into setting up a 4 GPU (GTX460) system and kind of stumbled onto a problem (I think).

Looking at the pictures the cards have 2x 6 pin PCI connectors and NVIDIA says they use 160W full load.

Will the below PSU handle them?

I've been running one of these 24/7 since November:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817182188

They go on sale for $99 on a routine basis.

But even this only powers 3 GTX460's out-of-the-box. It has 6x PCIe 6-pin.

Many GTX460's come with Molex>PCIe power adapters to power the 4th card. Use the Molex (floppy power) on 2 cards, single port, don't try to power an entire card off of one Molex power lead.

PS - GTS450's use 1x 6-pin each. They are down about 10% PPD from the 460.

Without knowing the rest of your hardware list, we can't know if that PSU will handle the whole system. ;)

Plus you'll need 4 of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812201004 because that Seasonic only has 4 single PCI-e connectors.

If you go to http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html they recommend an X-750 to run dual 460s, probably because of the connectors... ;)

With 4x GPUs, you probably be better off with something link this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 17256054&T or like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817256069
