A new way to look for (at?) randomness in surface structures

Princeton University researchers have come up with a new of generating random 2D surfaces. I wonder if it will have any impact on understanding cellular membranes.
Edit: I also wonder how it can be applied to Turing's Reaction-Diffusion system.
