By the late 1980s and early 1990s, the discovery of a genetic link between beta amyloid and Alzheimer’s led to the assumption that beta amyloid was the cause of Alzheimer’s disease.

This step was decidedly unscientific. Then two things, A and B, happen together, there is no scientific reason to conclude that A causes B. It's just as likely that B causes A or that neither one causes the other -- (e.g.- they might both be caused by some other factor C.) The assumption appears to have been wishful thinking, not science.

Sometimes learning comes at a high cost, & original thought dies hard. Or one stays on a path, most likely wrong. In this case old thinking, exhausted led to new. In those early days observation was it, tools & knowledge did not exist, like today, for the call made now. Anyway it's been hammered to death, Amyloid/ALZ causation, mainstream moves on, some diehards will pursue the later. And if the later proves against all odds to have merit, science will accommodate or incorporate.
