Full installation every time?

Post by Keff »

It seems to me that whenever I stop folding, I have to completely reinstall the software to begin folding again. Am I right?

No, that is not right. If you need to reinstall every time, that points to either a problem in the way the client is being installed, or in the way you use it. If you could post the beginning of one of the log files created be the folding client, that would be useful in seeing how the client is installed. Directions on how to find and post the log file are included here - viewtopic.php?f=16&t=26036. The first 100 or so lines of the log should be enough.

Maybe I'm inept, but I tried all three methods suggested for Windows 7 and 8.1, and I can't find any log folders. There's no log option in the advanced controls, and no logs in the FAH folder.

I'm running Windows 10 - does that matter?

The log can be seen in the log tab of Advanced Control although you'll need probably to click Refresh to get back to the top of the log -- and you may need to temporarily un-check the Follow option.

I don't know how to refresh the log. Here's some of it. Does this tell you anything?

When you installed FAH, did you log out from your normal windows ID and log in to another account for administration? Did you select "install just for me" or "install for everyone"?

FAH should be installed from the Windows account that you use most of the time; not from a separate account. If your normal Windows account does not have administrative rights, at some point during the installation it will ask you for the administrative password.

There won't be any log information unless you're running FAH from the same account you installed it on. Otherwise, you can refresh the log as follows:
Open the Advanced Control client (FAHClient). Click on the "log" tab and at the bottom you can uncheck the "Follow" box (which means you no longer need to see the most recent portion of the log). You'll also see "refresh" which will load the beginning part of the log above the final portion (so you can scroll all the way back).

Thanks. I use a standard account. I don't recall being asked for admin. permission during the install. I accepted all the defaults during install. Ultimately, not a big deal.

It is important that we diagnose your problem. Others may have the same problem, which makes it a big deal since it's not just your problem.

Please show us the first 100 lines of you log. (see instructions in the signature block of my earlier post.)

I refreshed it. Here are ~ the first hundred lines.

I notice that it includes " Platform: win32 XP

That refers to the system that built the client. Details of your system and a bit further down.
Please use the Full Editor and put log listings in Code tags -- it makes your post much easier to read. :D
As to the reinstall problem, the log shows folding successfully restarting on WUs that were saved when you last stopped folding.
Do you get the FAHControl icon in the systray (or whatever Win10 has)? If you right-click it, is the pause option ticked? If you click that line, does folding start?

Don't feel bad, Keff. I just brought a new Win10-64 system on-line yesterday and I've discovered I have the same problem you're reporting.

How are you starting FAH?

When I stop folding, the system tray icon disappears. However, when I restart it (via full installation) it picks up the work where it left off. Please explain to me where I can find the full editor and put log listings in the code tags. It's folding to beat the band when it's running. I have plenty of CPU cycles to do other things when I set it on medium. I've noticed that when set on high, I don't seem to get work units for the CPU.

I restart FAH by reinstalling it.

When I first installed it, I got an error message that OpenCL was required. I searched NVidea's website and then called support. I didn't get any help there, so I searched the web until I found an OpenCL file, downloaded it and stuck it in my programs folder. Then FAH installed and began running.

Cheers, Keff

Full Editor - when you post on this forum you have the option of using Quick Reply to a post or the POSTREPLY button. The second option will take you directly into the Full Editor mode. Or, right next to the Submit button is one for Full Editor. That will take whatever you have entered in the Quick Reply window and go to the Full Editor.

As for why you do not get CPU WU's when you got to Full, the client reserves one CPU core for your GPU folding slot. That leaves 7. On Medium the client will use one less or 6 in your case. There are plenty of WU's for CPU:6, but very few for CPU:7.

So I would recommend just leaving the setting at Medium or editing the CPU slot configuration to explicitly use 6 CPU threads. The next client version currently released for a public Beta test does a better job at auto-negotiatiating a suitable CPU setting.

My wife just bought a HP desktop running Windows 10. It has an integrated GPU, so I installed FAH just for the CPU. FAH runs whenever the machine is on. I set it to pause when the machine's in use. I don't think my wife knows it's running. ;)

As an aside, maybe future version could play the protein. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/22/scien ... trilobites

Installing FAH without the permission of the machine's owner is contrary to FAH's user agreement ... but in community property states I suppose we can call your wife an allowable exception. ;)

In fact, the CPU slot can run even when the machine is in use. Processing on the CPU creates no noticeable performance reduction in foreground activities except maybe if she's a gamer. GPU processing often causes noticeable delays and needs pause until the machine is idle.
