booger thought they would have kept a close eye on backing up the beta team membership, As it is such an important part of the project.

Everything was backed up. WW is still working on issues with the previous site and database, as has been discussed elsewhere.

But at the same time how many active beta testers existed out of all the people with accounts? How many even looked in the forum once a week?

Im sure in a week or two all the active testers will have been re-accepted to beta.

By the way, the only reason I posted your user name and post count is to show the user info from the old forum was backed up. Both info that is publicly available from that forum. Try not to read too much in to it.

The backup is not the issue.

When you registered for folding-community.org the forum software assigned you an internal identifier. Then somebody manually attached that identifier to the group called the Beta Team.

Everybody who registers here is created as as a new (standard) user. After you register here, somebody still needs to add your new user identification to the Beta Team group. Even the Admins, Moderators, and Pande Group members had to be reattached to the appropriate forum groups. There's a lot of manual work required to build a new forum from memory.

WW has been trying to restore the database backup to a freshly installed version of phpBB with only partial success. We still don't know what caused the original problems -- hardware, hackers, etc. ? - - but we're still waiting (im-)patiently to see if he'll be successful.

When somebody reports that they had a corrupted WU that had been processing for a couple of days all we can do is say we understand. When several years of forum history may have been permanently corrupted, we still don't have much to say except that we feel the pain, too.

With the size of the forum, phpBB might not be the best solution ... did WW investigated other engines to migrate to them (some also provide migration scripts from phpBB)

Not that I know of, but we'll consider your suggestions if you have any.

Most of free forums will need a mod to protect them (I know punBB, and it needs a mod like phpBB)

I know some other but they are not free : Invision Power Board (I used it when it was free ... and I liked it), vBulletin, MyDiscussions (we use a free version at AF forums, and it's very powerfull ... can handle 1000+ simultaneous users on a decent server).

Those which are not free always provide migration scripts, and support that can help doing so.

I'm also testing phpBB v3 : http://phpbb3.fleucorp.fr/ ... it's been set up some months ago, and I don't see spam bot yet ... they may have found a correct protection in that version

If you need help and don't want to switch forum software, I could help modding this one ...
