Console client doesnt connect but GUI does

Hi,

I have been having this problem with all of the console clients I have been using in the past (5.03 i believe). It seems none of them can connect anymore, though they once did. What is even stranger is that the GUI clients connect and do their work just fine. The settings for this are the exact same with the one exception being that all my console clients were/are set to machine id 8

Any ideas whats going on here?

Hello stratus_ss, welcome to the forum.

Please post that exact message. Please post the first 30 lines from the fahlog.txt file of one of the console clients that can't connect. Please also post a small section of the fahlog further down showing the connection error. Please post more details about your system. What OS, your hardware, etc?

You didn't post FAHlog.txt from the clients on your machine so I have to guess a lot of things that I'd rather base on real facts. Please post that information in your next reply.

As near as I can tell, you are running four clients and you have three Windows machines. I do not believe that setting the MachineID to 8 has anything to do with the problem but there rarely is a reason to set that value unless you're running multiple clients on the same machine so we can narrow the problem down to one machine which apparently has a 5.03 GUI client and a 5.0x Console client. If the GUI client has MachineID=1, then there doesn't seem to be a Console client with MachineID=8, so I'm confused.

Please describe your hardware and include a list of security software such as firewalls or anti-spy-ware software.

Alright, I wasnt trying to leave things out. The problem is that there are about 12 different machines so describing all the hardware is, in fact, quite the challange, as is posting all the logs.

Some of the machines are multi-cpu or multi-core which is why the clients would have different IDs.

now these two clients, both the GUI and the console are on the same subnet behind the same router. In fact the console computer is also running a single GUI client until such a time as I am able to fix whatever the problem is. The GUI console is chugging away.

The other consoles however are spread out across various computers and were working previously but now are not.

I didn't imply that you INTENTIONALLY left anything out -- just that it's more difficult to figure out what's going on. In fact, we may have uncovered another problem that wasn't obvious from your first post, which is why I suggested that something seemed wrong. If you have 12 different machines, are they all folding with the same UserName? Have they all produced at least one WU within the past 50 days? Notice that your stats indicate that you have four machines, only one of which has produced a WU within the past week.

You'll also notice that the first line of the log says

which means that FAH has never been run on that machine before, and no actual progress is made before the log ends. Is that typical of your other GUI machines?

The log from your console machine also seems to say that no permanent files were found even though FAH had been run previously.

Maybe I'm assuming too much, but I though perhaps you had been running FAH for some time on these machines. If all of your installations are new, then you can ignore all of my previous concerns.

Now back to the question you actually asked. Clearly this machine cannot connect to the internet to get work, as you said. What's strange is that this machine has previously connected to the internet because it already has a value assigned for User ID: 4FA5F559326A047F stored in the registry but that's because you got the GUI client running on that machine.

On this machine, can you open the following with your browser?

Does your router block connections from certain ports?
Is this machine behind a proxy, too?
Are both clients running as the same Windows User?
Does your proxy or firewall require you to give it a password to connect?
What kind of security software is on that machine?

Assuming that some of these 12 machines are just getting FAH installed for the first time, what happens if you run the Console client without installing the GUI client?

I do notice that you started the Console client twice with MachineID=1 and apparently you didn't get a message about a conflict. Then it somehow gets switched to MachineID=6 without any apparent reconfiguration step. Did you remove that information from FAHlog.txt?

As a general rule, I do not recommend installation the Console client as a service until you know it's running correctly. That question really should be under the "Advanced" section of the initial configuration.

First I did mis-speak I meant to say 12 different clients. I think there are 8 machines total.

No they are not under the same user name. I originally had them under the same name but as one folding team dispanded I started switching the user names over and never got them all. 7 of the 12 have posted something in the last 50 days, 3 are being debugged right now so they would not have posted in the last 50 but this I expected.

Is this machine behind a proxy, too?
Are both clients running as the same Windows User?
Does your proxy or firewall require you to give it a password to connect?
What kind of security software is on that machine?

Assuming that some of these 12 machines are just getting FAH installed for the first time, what happens if you run the Console client without installing the GUI client?

Yes the router blocks certain ports, although I have a hard time understanding why the console would use a different port then the GUI.

The security is both hardware and software firewalls. However, I have tried disabling both for the last day hoping that the console would connect but it is at attempt 41.

The console was what I would have ideally run as it is more transparent. It simply does not connect at all which is why I tried the GUI client

I do notice that you started the Console client twice with MachineID=1 and apparently you didn't get a message about a conflict. Then it somehow gets switched to MachineID=6 without any apparent reconfiguration step. Did you remove that information from FAHlog.txt?

I did not remove the information. However, when I installed the GUI client I know from the past that it takes ID 1. So I edited the config file on the console client to ID 6 so that it would not encounter a conflict.

I know what you are thinking... I messed up the config file. Well I thought of that as well so I deleted the entire console folder and tried again from scratch later that day. Same problem it still wont connect

s a general rule, I do not recommend installation the Console client as a service until you know it's running correctly.

Ya that is a good point. I have never had this problem before. And I always watch the output from the console screen upon the initial setup.

hoping that the problem would resolve itself I have been waiting. After not being able to connect on the 889th try I uninstalled/deleted the FAH_504 client and redownloaded it again. When I tried to run a console and a GUI the console for some reason was using the GUI config file even though the files are on 2 seperate hard drives. (it did not add anything to the folder where the 504.exe file was) However the console connected to the server this time

So I uninstalled the GUI and all of a sudden the console would not connect anymore

so i am still stumped... its a shame to waiste some of my cores. On the other hand, I notice that a few more of my clients have come back to life in the last few days (now seeing 8) which is why i was hoping the problem would resolve itself but it has not

I am sure this has been posted already, but PLEASE remember that the GUI client creates a registry entry that tells ALL fah clients to use the one and only GUI fah client files.

If you install a console client, it will try to run using the GUI files. The two will conflict, as you have seen all too well.

If you run more than one client on a computer, you MUST ALWAYS USE the -local switch. Thanks.
