Try this:

While your machine is folding, open FileExplorer and type %APPDATA% in the "quick access" field (including the %-signs). Open the folder called FAHClient and the file called log. Post the first few screens of that file.

(If this doesn't work, ask for more help. This works on my "normal" machine. Now that I've figure that out, I'll go try it on my new Win10 machine that's also needing a reinstall every time.)

OK. I tried it from my own machine. What I discovered is that there is no FAHClient folder in the %APPDATA% folder. It's actually in a similar directory belonging to the admin account on this machine. I believe Win10 made some kind of change that broke the FAH installer. I'm going to open a bug ticket on this issue unless there's already one there.

Here's my scenario. See if it matches yours.

My system has an administrative ID ("<admin>") and a non-administrative ID ("<me>").

If I'm logged on as "me" when I install, the installer asks me for the password associate with "admin" and the installation proceeds and FAH starts running.
If I'm logged on as "admin" when I install, the installation also proceeds and FAH starts running.

In both cases, FAH's data is stored in a directory called C:\Users\<admin>\AppData\Local\FAHClient This is a bug. In fact, the data should be stored in C:\Users\<me>\AppData\Local\FAHClient

This is very much like the known issue where the installer asks if you want to install just for me or for all users.

Also, there should be a startup script ("shortcut") that points to the place where the data is actually stored.

On my previous installs, there are two differences.
1) I've used Windows7
2) My personal ID ('me") happens to also be an administrative ID, so the installer does not ask me for a password, it just wants me to confirm that I'm authorizing Windows to use my administrative credentials.

I don't yet know if the bug is associated with 1) or with 2). I only know that if I install on "admin" and then try to run on "me" it always fails.

A temporary Work-Around for this problem may be possible but the only long-term solution is to fix the problem in FAH's Windows Installer.

An update on my situation. I installed FAH when I was logged in to a standard account, which I almost always use. Yesterday, I stopped folding and rebooted my computer. I logged in as the administrator and imaged my disk. When I was done, I looked in the tray and found that FAH was running. No reinstall necessary. When I logged out of the admin account, folding stopped. So now I just leave it running in the admin account.

Is this the same machine you talked about earlier? CPU only? Did you install FAH as a service?

... or is this on "your" machine?

I have successfully managed to reproduce the full installation problem and work out a potential work-around on one of my Windows10 machines but I need to see the first part of the log so I know what kind of an install we're talking about.

Yes, this is on "my" machine, the one i first posted about, CPU and GPU. I'm on a laptop now, but I'll post the first part of my log shortly.

I used the code format in the previous message, but it doesn't look that great. If someone could tell me how to do it better, I'd appreciate it.

I completely uninstalled FAH, then reinstalled it. It did require my admin permission to install.

That's the way a code block is supposed to look.

Did you start running FAH from Windows User Keff? I don't think you'll need to reinstall again, but we won't know until you try it.

I installed it while in Keff. I just quit it, and there's no icon in the tray. There is an icon on the admin desktop and one in the admin account's tray. So I can run it in the admin. account without reinstalling, but not in the standard account. So it's being installed in the admin account . . .

OK. I'm convinced that the installer that has worked on previous version of Windows no longer works correctly in Windows 10.

Create three new shortcuts on your desktop. Call one 1FAHControl.
Start in: C:/Users/Keff/AppData/Roaming/FAHClient
Target: "C:/Program Filess\FAHClient\FAHControl.exe"

That should open the Advanced Control program. Does it show the active threads?

Call another one 1FAHData
Both the target and the start in should be set to C:/Users/Keff/AppData/Roaming/FAHClient

Create a third shortcut called 1FAHClient
Start in: (same as above)
Target: "C:\Program Files\FAHClient\HideConsole.exe" "C:\Program Files\FAHClient\FAHClient.exe"

The latter won't work if FAH is already running. It needs to be put wherever the startup programs are found. It's late and I'll have to figure out where Windows10 puts that tomorrow.

There should be (at least) two files in c:/Users one using the name of your administrator and the other using the name of your everyday (non-admin) user. In the above shortcuts, I've assumed that Keff is your everyday user.

I apologize for not finishing these instructions tonight....too tired and I'd like to get it right.

Thanks. Yes, Keff is the standard account I use almost all the time. I'll follow your instructions and let you know how it works.

The 1FAHControl shortcut just opens the folder FAHClient folder (This PC > Windows (C:) > Users > Keff > AppData > Roaming > FAHClient. Same for IFAHData. I can't specify "C:\Program Files\FAHClient\HideConsole.exe" "C:\Program Files\FAHClient\FAHClient.exe" as a target.

Nevertheless, I'm still folding.

Ok. That's useful information.

On WIndows7, there were two types if installations, one of which placed the files in
C:/Users/<admin>/AppData/Roaming/FAHClient and the other which places them in
C:/Users/<non-admin>/AppData/Roaming/FAHClient
I believe Windows10 messed up that differentiation.

Since the ones I gave you contained "Keff" (i.e. <non-admin>) you can probably make everything work by replacing each occurrence of "Keff" with the name of you <admin> account. That worked for me, with no need to modify any security settings.

Now I'll have to figure out how to get the systray icon to work for you.
