Relation TFlops and PPD

Post by Theodore »

It just so happens to be, that my server running at ~35Tflops had an average PPD count of 3,5M PPD.
Just as I was upgrading it with a new 2080, to ~45Tflops, did I notice the similarities between TFlops and PPD.
At least, in my case, 10Tflops roughly equals 1M PPD.
Not sure if that is the same on other systems.

I won't be running my server at 45TFlops continuously though am tempted to give it a short burst at 1200Watts.
But more than likely will be running this around 40TFlops, due to the high power consumption cost.
The drop of those last 10% of performance, cuts the electric bill in half.

It depends on GPU generation too and operating system and other hardware.
So a gtx 1080 ti at 12 Tflops gets 1.2M PPD but a rtx 2080 at 12 Tflops gets 1.5M PPD because gpu architecture changed and FAH can use that more.
Currently Linux ist faster than Windows but that will be equalized with upcoming FAHCore22.
And each GPU needs one CPU core to feed it. And you want pcie 2.0 x4 speed on Linux and pcie 3.0 x8 speed on Windows for full performance on the fast GPUs. (Slow GPUs do not matter much.)
