Notes on FLOPS calculations

Post by wuffy68 »

1. the FLOPS description page reference from the OS stats is currently blank: https://foldingathome.org/faqs/flops/

2. the way FLOPS are calculated is a bit misleading because they are stated as available computational power over the course of 50 days
Active CPUS are defined as those which have returned WUs within 50 days
This doesn't really reflect how much computational power is contributed any given day ... using beer coaster math (only looking at native FERMI FLOPS), the Folding@home community is producing around 20 petaFLOPS per day on the average today, rather than the ~99 petaFLOPS stated on the OS stats page. https://stats.foldingathome.org/os which is looking at a potential output

FAH is undergoing some major updates in the infrastructure and global throughput is certainly below expectations. I expect these updates will be completed in the next month or two (since every server needs to be rebuilt). Let's review this question in Sept or Oct when things stabilize.

As always, thank you VERY MUCH for your prompt response Bruce... looking forward to seeing the updates to the system.
