People in general have so wrong thoughts about patents. If anything have been published before, no matter if it was 1893, no one can patent it any more. If it is found to be published. That is the first step in patenting, study for novelty. If anything is in public domain before patenting petition it is out of anyones patenting possibility. So do not worry. Also usually patents are focused only on some minor detail. Patent claims in litteral form are everyting that matters. Claim #1 is the only really important, others are just additional. Pictures are only clarilying them, they are not relevant in any other mean. Did I remember to mention not everyone understand what patents are?

Then, completely another thing is that these researches are not producing any drug recipes. They are just giving scientific knowledge to anyone who can handle it. One point here is that there's no reason to wait for miracle happening when you fold some months. It would be nice to have that possibility but its not going that way.

Patenting costs are high at least if it will be international patent. And if it is possible to have it granded. Plus patenting expences there will be annual fees to keep it formal.

Of course it is very hard to even know if any big company have used information produced here. Does it matter? It has made development faster in that case and those drug companies are still needed to develope actual drugs and make marketing. Who else could do it?

One thing to protect your product from copying is to write Pat. Pend. on it. If you want to start copying it, it is your concern to make clear if there is any patent and if so, what is the exact content of it. If you just read those words fron some package, it does not mean anything at all. Anyone can print them.
