Recent Freezes with F@H running unattended overnight

Post by WolvenSpectre »

For the better part of the past week when I leave running overnight/when I am away from PC much of the time I come back to find my computer frozen and have to do a manual restart. When I do I also notice a weird side effect.

I run Binary Fortresses's DisplayFusion Multi Monitor Utility. One of the things it does is run wallpaper slideshows downloaded from online. Now I have been running both of these programs together for almost half a year before this issue started up and it hasn't been updated recently so I don't think the issue is on DisplayFusion's end. However every time I restart Windows 10 Pro from the freeze my wallpaper is only showing on the top 1/4 of the screens and the rest is black, then when DisplayFusion starts up it loads a new wallpaper.

The other strange thing is that I can run F@H with my browser(HW acceleration off) watching videos and chatting on Discord and have F@H running on Full with no crashes or temperature issues.

Any idea what gives?

I don't run either DisplayFusion or Discord so I'm unable to comment on whether they have some kind of interaction with FAH. (I doubt it, but that's not based on any factual information.)

How about running two of the three programs overnight, see what happens, then the next night run a different pair, and then move to the other pair. You should learn something from that 3-night test.

You might also look at FAH's log. What was the last thing written to the log before the crash? When FAH finishe a WU, it will upload the result and download a new assignment. If something like Discord is left running, doesn't it also keep an internet connection open? That could be a way in which those two programs interfere with each other.

I guess it is a hardware issue either CPU/RAM/GPU overclocked or not compute stable.

Ok … just an off the wall guess … Do you usually leave you kit running overnight? … I ask as I have seen in the past that electrical spikes (such as night storage heating/water heating - or cheap electricity usage for washing machines, etc.) can sometimes cause enough of a spike to either cause a full reboot of kit or in some milder cases (which don't trip anything else in the house) freezes the graphics … Probably not relevant to this at all but I would be remiss if I didn't at least mention it.
