Losing work and could not connect

Three times when I have started the FAH client (v. 5.03) on my machine I have lost all of the frames that I had done in the previous session. Most recently I lost 65 of 250 and was back to zero. This is pretty disheartening for me and wasteful for you. Is there some way this kind of situation can be avoided?

Also, all day today the client was unable to connect to "Work Server (results)," although I had an internet connection and no settings on my firewall have changed (FAH has access to the internet). Is this issue on my end ?

Any thoughts on these problems?

How are you shutting down the client? Do you wait a bit before restarting your computer?

Are you overclocking?

Please post relevant info from FAHlog-Prev.txt and FAHlog.txt.

The Windows GUI V5.03 can be shut down using the context menu (right click) on the icon in systray and clicking Quit. (Do not use Pause.)

Are you running Windows Vista?

If you shut down your computer while the 5.03 client is paused, you'll lose your work. It must be running or stopped before shut down.

To reply:

No, I am not using Vista. Am using XP SP2.

No, I was not overclocking when the frames got lost. There were a few occasions (2 that I know of) when I was running the FAH client and the system rebooted due to an unstable overclocking. But those were not among the times I wrote about in my post, when I lost the frames I had done. At any rate, now I run the client only at confirmed settings, until I test and thoroughly confirm more aggressive OC's by the usual means (which won't be for a while).

In reference to shutting down the client, the responses indicate that it should be manually shut down each time the computer is shut down or rebooted. I now do that, in an abundance of caution after the frame loses. But on some occasions in the past, I didn't, relying on it to terminate safely like the other programs that run in the Windows tray (antivirus, antispyware etc.). I presume when the program is manually shut down it routinely saves its work. Also, in the configuration menu, advanced tab, the checkpoint slider is set to 6 minutes, which I think is more frequent than the default. I would have assumed this would save all work more than 6 minutes old, even if the pc crashed.

I append the part of FAHlog-Prev.txt (the full text is in excess of the posting limits), which goes back to the relevant time period for the frame loses. It shows several places where the work unit was deleted because of an issue with the digital signature, as well as some reports of pc system instability (although I am certain there have only been 2 incidents of OC resets, and the all temps in the system are far under any thermal thresholds).

The digital signature issue isn't related to losing work. It only happens when you download a new WU which was damaged during the download process. Either your ISP isn't doing their job or you've got a bad ethernet cable or a weak WiFi signal or some other piece of equipment that it's working well. Actually, it could also be something that is getting corrupted by your anti-virus software or something like that.

Whatever the communications problem, it's confirmed by the numerous could-not-connect errors that you're getting.

The I/O ERRORs are a lot more frequent than they should be. (Now that I think of it, they could also be causing the digital signature problem, but not the could-not-connect errors.) You might have some hardware issue with your disk or the ATA chips that drive it. You said you were only overclocked at the confirmed level, which probably means that you still are overclocked but you feel comfortable that you won't be getting BSODs, etc. What did you do to confirm whether the ATA chipset is working within or outside of its stable range?

Also, in the configuration menu, advanced tab, the checkpoint slider is set to 6 minutes, which I think is more frequent than the default. I would have assumed this would save all work more than 6 minutes old, even if the pc crashed.

It will save all the work only if your disk creates an accurate set of files that can be read back without error.

The default is 15 minutes and I find that to be a reasonable number. I rarely shut down and never crash and if it's going to be one or two more minutes before the next checkpoint, I just wait before shutting down so the average amount of work that I have to repeat is smaller than you might guess.
