I think the first thing anyone would need to know to help you is the make and model of router.

Here's a link to the manual for that router: Link

I've never owned a Netgear router. The routers I have owned, Linksys, have never required any special settings to access the F@H servers. The only settings I have ever changed on my routers are the admin password, PPPoE because that's what my ISP uses, and the Wireless security settings. Other than these, I've found that default settings have worked.

Are you able to connect to the internet except for the F@H servers?

I can connect to the internet no problems and i can ping the server addresses. Just seems to be a problem with up/downloading WUs

What changes did you make?

I would try using the button on the router to return it to default settings, then make the minimum changes necessary to connect to the internet. It would help if you document each change.

If your also running a firewall program on your computer you might want to check that nothing there is blocking F@H.

If you open them in a browser, do you get the "OK" message?

I get the OK message on the results server and the collection server.

The changes i tried were on the F@H config/connections, i tried setting proxy server. i have changed everything back. everything unchecked
I use norton firewall and have had no problems before.

Have you tried port forwarding port 8080 ? That could be your problem, also try lowering your router's security settings.

Please post FAHlog.txt showing which servers you can't reach. There are several servers which are currently returning connection errors and they may not be corrected until tomorrow about this time of day due to the holiday schedule. Are you able to receive new work assignments?

Also temporarily disable your software firewall. The fact that you can get the OK message from your browser but not from the FAH client suggests that the problem may be in your local machine, not the router.

OK, since you can't open http://assign.stanford.edu:8080 or http://assign2.stanford.edu with the FAH client, it's not getting any internet connectivity.

What does tracert assign2.stanford.edu give you?

I get OK from tracert assign2.stanford.edu.

Have turned off software firewall and that seems to have sorted it.
thanks for your help.

You might want to switch it back on and work out how to set a custom rule to those two ips.

I'd personally rather have good security than no security and a working application. Without the firewall you have opened yourself up to the webs best bugs. There is an average time limit published somewhere of how long it takes to root a machine without a firewall, im damned if i can find it, but its something like a couple of hours of average web browsing will do it (less if you like pr0n and other deviant things).

I agree that the firewall should be turned on again, but you don't want a custom rule for just two IPs. You really need a custom rule to permit the FAH client to connect to the internet. If you do it by IP address, you've got to do all of the servers plus any that might be added later.

The anti-spyware software is permitting IE and Firefox and ping and ... to open a connection to the internet but blocking the FAH client from making any connections.
