You have a 2-core system with a GPU. One core is reserved for running the GPU slot, so moving to Full is not going to increase the number of cores available for CPU folding.
So in my setup, when the slider is at full, one of my CPU cores is tied up with the folding that is going on in the GPU slot, and one CPU core is for the CPU folding?

If I have the slider set to "medium," how does this configuration change?
It actually doesn't change the number of cores for a CPU slot on a dual-core system. There are no more available cores to increase the number. It would however make a difference on a system with 3 or more cores, or a dual-core system without a usable GPU. More information on the effects that slider positions have on the client are available on the V7 Intermediate FAQ. The page has not been updated completely to reflect changes in the current version that split the Idle setting from the slider position, but it should give a good idea on what the settings do.

The "empty work server assignment" message means that there currently are no WUs which will run on your system. That's currently correct.

The problem can be seen in the message "Enabled folding slot 00: READY cpu:1" There are very few projects which can run with just one CPU and from time-to-time, the server runs out.

You can choose to wait until there's a fresh supply or you can reconfigure so you have at least 2 CPUs for folding.

AKA, move the power slider to full. ;)

Got it. I think I better understand how two core CPUs function with a GPU involved. Thanks.

Setting the folding power to full has caused overheating problems on my laptop in the past so I am concerned that this may recur. Is there a way of adding another CPU whilst using the medium power setting?

Medium setting = use half the cores available, aka use 1 of 2 cores. Not use 50% of both cores.

The NaCl chrome client is a better option for using a Medium setting on a dual core system.

BTW, Joe_H, again thanks for your help. I have a much better understanding of things, and have all my computers back to folding.

I'm aware of the no-single-core jobs problem. It's a recurring error on my work server; I've fixed it temporarily several times but the permanent fix is still in the works. Sorry about that and will have a complete fix soon.

Older computers no longer folding

Post by DevilishBooster »

I have several older computers (Pentium 4 CPUs running Win XP) that I have had running client 7.4.4 and they were working just fine. About a month ago we had a severe thunderstorm roll through at night and it made the power go out. I didn't restart the computers until about a week ago, but now none of them are folding. I have reinstalled the client on all of them and made sure that the network configuration is correct, but they still just sit there saying they are ready. Are older CPUs not supported anymore?

7im - using the desktop client and full folding power resulted in temperatures up to 77C overnight. I've installed the NaCl
version from the Chrome web store which seems to run pretty well so have quit the desktop client. Thanks for your
advice, meanwhile I will await sryckbos' final fix. It is a concern however that after many years of running various
versions of the FAH client using only the default settings without any issues that now, without these tweaks, it does not
process any WUs. Perhaps this information should be included with the download as the immediate reaction of non
technical users would simply be to uninstall it.

Thank you for the update. I am looking forward to doing more one core CPU folding.

I was beginning to think that the four computers that I have a dual core G3258 in (with a separate GPU in each) were not going to be doing any more one core CPU folding.

@abravo - The two older logs you posted were useful, they identified another WS besides the one sryckbos is working on fixing. I will be contacting the PG to see if that can be brought back into serving WU's as well. It is a server for a group of older projects, they may have finished.

I am glad I was able to help.

If you explain an easy way to identify the single core server in the work log, I can check last months work logs from my other two computers to see what servers they were getting work from.
