Issues getting a WU for CPU from multiple servers

Post by Thelonious »

Hey all,
I've been having consistent issues with the FAH client, in that it won't run ANY cpu workloads. The workload server is labeled as 0.0.0.0, and the project is also labeled as 0.
You can see the log below, and all the errors it contains. I've also re-downloaded several times, uninstalling after each time. For a while that was the only way to get a CPU WU, but now even that doesn't work anymore. All drivers are also up to date.

Your report is a Windows10 issue or you've made improper installation settings. The WUs for both your CPU and GPU slots have been successfully downloaded but Windows or your security software is blocking the analysis software.

03:19:33:ERROR:WU00:FS00:Exception: Failed to open xxxx Access is denied.

The FAH software needs to be able to access the "cores" subdirectory and everything in it.
(By default, this and all other FAHData are found in %APPDATA%\FAHClient)

Hello Thelonious, welcome to the Folding Support Forum.

It is not a good idea to install both the Program and the Data to the Program Files location. There are new Windows security features that prevent programs from accessing data files in the Programs directory.

Please reinstall the client and use the Express (default settings)! Thanks.

Do you know how to fix it?

Thank you, However you should know that I used the default settings. Should I move the Program files to some other location

I create my own "Apps" folder on the C: drive and install all programs to that folder (though I'm still on Win7, I've done this since NT4).

Uninstall the client through the Control Panel, including the Data option.

Then reinstall the client using the Custom option. However, do not change any of the default settings.

Please note the directory for the Programs, and the directory for the Data. Post those locations here when done. It may be a Windows 10 issue, but will need to confirm with this test. Thanks.

I think the key qustion is How are you starting FAHClient?

Choice #1: Let FAH start automatically (default). {The program will start in the background. Only FAHControl or WebControl is needed in the foreground.)
Choice #2: If you feel you must start FAHClient manually, use one of the shortcuts provided. Do not start FAHClient by clicking on the program in "program files"

Okay, the install location is thisPC > LocalDisc(c) > FAH > FAHClient

Unfortunately I can't find the Data file, but I can usually get to it by Putting %appdata% in run and Clicking on FAH.
I know I'm a bit of a noob, so every little bit of instruction helps. Note also that only the CPU is unable to receive work units, but even when FAH says it's not working, task manager says it's at 100%, and the FAH client is taking up almost all of that.

The default installation location for the programs is:
ThisPC > LocalDisc(x) > Program files > FAHClient

The default location for FAHData is
%appdata%\FAHClient.

When FAHClient is started with the shortcut provided by the installation, both directories will be in use. When FAHControl is provided by the shortcut provided, the same two directories will be in use.

In Win10, under Start>All apps > FAHClient you'll find shortcuts for
About FAH
Data Directory
FAHControl
FAHViewer
Folding@home
Uninstall
WebControl

Use those shortcuts (or, if you prefer the Desktop, you can copy them there).

The Folding@home shortcut should also be automatically run during any logon, and it start the background agent along with WebControl, so you shouldn't actually need that one under normal circumstances.

You can start either FAHControl (or restart WebControl) to manage what FAH is doing but they can be closed/minimized when not in use.
