Are you really out of Cancer, Alzheimer, Huntington's?

Post by Sandman192 »

I saw the (COVID-19) shortage page when went to the Form home page. That's just for the (COVID-19) right???

But you don't have a shortage of other viruses that we use to run right? I dought it.

Why not make a simple algorithm where we can work on other viruses when (COVID-19) runs out. True are computers don't use much power when idle but still, it's a wast of power anyway.

BOINC had an option to get work from somewhere else not related to my work when it ran out of work that you selected. Learn from that. Do it's on your side.

If you select “any” under which disease you want to support, and they run out of COVID-19 WUs, then you will get whatever other WUs are available. The other WUs are in short supply due to the focus on the Coronavirus and the large increase in the number of folders. But rest assured that eventually you will get a work unit. I would like to see more research on Alzheimer’s though, so if anyone from any of the labs sees this, that would be great! I understand that there are priorities for research though, and I am happy to continue folding regardless. Thanks for all you guys do!

The shortage apply to all WUs ... if we ran out of COVID-19 related work, you'll get some for other disease ... but there's so many request now that everything is low on stocks.

has the support team reached out to Stanford or others for additional resources?

So far they have added 5 servers on Azure, one from Oracle, plus a few from other places. Several are online already, others are in the process of being setup and configured. The servers currently active are listed here:

https://apps.foldingathome.org/serverstats

As for Stanford, there are a few associated with the F@h Consortium located there, but the Pande Lab is mostly inactive since Dr. Pande moved to the private sector. The current director is Dr. Bowman at WUSTL, the other major sites are at Temple and MSKCC along with some smaller groups at other universities in other countries.

What work? And this if after my computer cent the last finishes the last WU. It's been on and off for a week for now.
The other WUs are in short supply due to the focus on the Coronavirus and the large increase in the number of folders.
How are other WUs in short supply? They only got in short supply (I mean halted ALL supply) ever since the outbreak started. Folding has not even reported on any short supply other than Corona. I don't think Folding wouldn't skip on reporting on any disease that are in short supply in their news section. I mean it's new after all.

The log you have posted has (at the moment) little to do with WU "shortage" of any type … The massive twenty-fold increase in folders has been overwhelming the assignment and work servers … I think you will find that the messaging you are seeing is in effect showing the "friendly fire" ddos attack on the servers from so many people trying to participate.

Every server is cranking out as many units as it can. They cant keep up with the demand. Either there are so many covid units going out the server cant get them all out due to load and never makes it down the list or maybe they are all out there but you just dont see them due to sheer number of covid units. Remember that before covid they were serving about 10000 units an hour, now they are doing over 100000 an hour, I've seen it at almost 150000.

There are a few servers that are struggling to generate(keep) WU. Specifically brodgar.seas.wustl.edu(other wustl.edu are low also) and linus1.foldingathome.org they will get >4000 WU then empty out in ~20 minutes. Some times brodgar will only get <100 WU for a few minutes of jobs. Alot of the time when you refresh the serverstats page you will see the empty servers Assign Rate jump up and down indicating that some WU were generated but they were sent out before the refresh.

Personally I would like to see linus1 to get 200,000 WU dumped on it to see how their 5Gbps connection does. They(LTT on youtube) also plan on doing a video on WS stats such as data throughput, cpu usage, ram usage, or any other interesting data but they need WU to distribute to get any interesting numbers. For now I will hold on to the belief that linus1 is in validation mode to make sure the WU generated then sent out and received are good to put into production of real science.

It's not just for COVID-19, but for any F@H net activity, because servers still can't supply enough WUs to all these new participants; or maybe even network infrastructure itself overloaded by all those who staying at homes.

COVID-19 these days went to first place of daily lethality from all known infectious diseases, moving tuberculosis to second place.
Thus COVID-19 is primary target, until pandemic would be stopped.
