[14:29:07] + Could not connect to Work Server (results)
[14:29:07] (171.67.108.25:8080)
[14:29:07] + Retrying using alternative port
[14:29:07] Connecting to http://171.67.108.25:80/

[14:29:43] + Could not connect to Assignment Server 2
[14:29:43] + Couldn't get work instructions.
ending today with
[16:59:09] + Attempting to get work packet
[16:59:09] - Will indicate memory of 4096 MB
[16:59:09] - Connecting to assignment server
[16:59:09] Connecting to http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/
[17:00:24] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
[17:00:24] + Could not connect to Assignment Server
[17:00:24] Connecting to http://assign2.stanford.edu:80/
[17:01:39] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
[17:01:39] + Could not connect to Assignment Server 2
[17:01:39] + Couldn't get work instructions.
[17:01:39] - Attempt #19 to get work failed, and no other work to do.
When I enter 171.67.108.25:8080 or 171.67.108.25:80 in the browser I get "OK". When the Mac OSX System Preferences Client tries, it gets nowhere. MacPro all uptodate. - 16 housrs later, still no connections.

Re: 503 when contacting server
As Stanford transitions over to the new server code, the "OK" response is being replaced with the file download response that you saw. I tried it just now and got a little 23-byte file. When I opened it in TextEdit, it turned out to be the "OK".
Honestly, I'm no expert in servers or firewalls, but in my experience and reading here, when you get a response from the server via the browser, the server is willing to connect to your machine and (as Bruce says above) the problem is likely to be something in your system.
If you have a local firewall or local security software, can you change its permissions for the System Preferences client? Perhaps a recent software/security upgrade has tightened the default restrictions? Hoping some of these guesses are helpful.

Re: 503 when contacting server
How about some machine specs? Which version of OS X? Wireless or wired connection? Direct connection or router?
Fold! It does a body good!™
