This work unit EUE'd. I have had hardware problems before with UNSTABLE_MACHINE error due to running the GPU too hot. I am using a Zotac GeForce 8400GS with FAH GPU Tracker set to priority of 90 and a percent usage of 80 to keep its temperature down. OS is Windows XP 64bit. Here is the entire log file:

Thank you. As a little note, I have stopped GPU folding on that card since it was wasting too many WUs with UNSTABLE_MACHINE errors. Not sure if it was temps or something else that kept causing it. Also I have a question, if I may. When the server gets a partial upload, does it immediately put that WU up for reassignment or does it still wait for the preferred deadline? Or does it create the next WU from the partial one?

Thanks, 7im. I have another question if it's not too much :) I noticed that this work unit and others that did not fully complete were compressed to 21.5% - 35%. That is much smaller than completed work units of the same projects which were usually compressed to 73%. Is this because there are things written to the end of the file of completed work units that do not allow for a high rate of compression? And if so, what is written?

Too much. No one has disected a work unit in an effort to know which parts compress well and which parts do not. Any guess in that regard would be only a wild guess. ;) What is known about WU contents is in the FAH WIKI.

Plus it's 2048-bit encrypted, right? So I guess dissection would be kind of difficult ;) I was just hoping someone would have that kind of top secret inside information for me...

I suspect it's not top secret, just technical. In some sense, perhaps its analogous to the way .zip files work; the amount of compression varies from one to the other, and most people don't know why. Perhaps you could get the reasons from someone who knows, or off fahwiki like 7im says. I've never pursuit the matter myself though.

Thanks Bruce. Definitely done folding with that card now.

On fahwiki.net's Work Unit page (http://fahwiki.net/index.php/Work_Unit), there is a link in the second paragraph about rate equations but the page it takes you to has not archived the folding-community.org's web page that has the rate equations. Is folding-community.org what this forum used to be?

edit: dumb question on my part. I put the /viewtopic... of the folding-community.org address into foldingforum.org and it was not the post that I was looking for, so the answer to my question would be no

That page could use a bit of updating -- but you can probably find the equations you're looking for on the official FAQ pages, thouigh it's not obvious to me what you're looking for.

Yes, folding-community.org died and foldingforum.org was it's replacement.
