anyone got any ideas on what causes the failed_3 error instantly like that? also, what causes the failed_3 error?

if more info is needed, i can retrieve it

also of note, i manually restarted it, and it is happily folding 7808 right now.

The link explains the meaning of the 'Error 255 = 0xff' code:
FF is a generic segfault return code. This has many possible causes, but the first thing to check for is overclocking/overheating or a hardware failure in the memory subsystem.

i figured since it wasn't doing much, it wouldn't cause an issue. the one i have (as with one in image) has no additional power requirements.
gpu: 75 max (as is limit from pcie bus)
cpu: 95 watts
hard drive: maybe 10-15
fans and other misc: maybe 50

that totals 225-235 watts or so out of 350 total. also since it's antec, i trust it to be able to deliver full wattage rating. personally i think the 400 watt thing is for headroom from cheap psu's.

as for your previous post, i'll check ram if it happens again, although i'll probably end up just shutting it down because i don't have the ram to fix it because it's old ddr2, and for the ppd it gets, not exactly worth spending money on ddr2 ram.

It is very unsafe to assume that a video card will only draw a certain amount of power. Transient current peaks can and do occur, for example when minimizing or un-minimizing a window. The transient current drawn from the power supply can briefly rise to the peak value for that video card, and if the power supply is inadequate, the output voltages will drop below their normal values.
