TPFs of over an hour are not unusual on a dual core for Project 6098. There are no failures in the database so I suspect you may have dumped a work unit that probably shouldn't have been deleted as quickly as you did.

I'll mark it for follow-up but it might not get reassigned for at least 7.7 days.

Though it's a technicality, you didn't wait even a full 60 minutes. The WU started processing at 13:33:19 and the log ends in less than 32 seconds after 14:31:33. Assuming an actual TPF of 1h 30m, the WU would be finished in 6.25 days and earn a bonus because that's before the 7.7 day timeout required by the QRB.

I've got a dual core machine that's currently running a Project 6099 assignment that has a TPF of 1:23:45 and the Points/Deadlines/K-Factor numbers are identical. Total processing time will be 5.82 days which is less than the 7.7 day requirement. (It doesn't happen to have a supported GPU like yours does.) Mine also has a relatively small cache so it often processes much closer to the Timeout on proteins with larger atom counts than when I happen to be assigned a smaller protein.

Hopefully you used the --dump 02 string to dump the WU rather than manually deleting WU files. Then it would have been reassigned quickly rather than waiting 7.7 days (minus 1 hour) for your copy to be declared missing and for somebody else to start on their up-to-7.7 days of processing time. Does your next log show the upload of a DUMPED report?

No, I followed the instructions that I found here:
Joe_H wrote:It looks like you have a WU that might be bad. Or possibly, Project 6338 is simulating a small protein and was limited to uniprocessor or SMP:2 systems, and for this particular WU is not splitting into two threads properly and crashing the core. If you want to try checking on the second possibility, pause folding and change the SMP count to 1 using Configure and then restart the SMP slot. If the WU folds, then that was the problem. You can change back to SMP:2 afterwards.

If that does not work, or you don't want to try the setting change, you can dump the WU. Copying directions given by another mod - bollix47, do the following:
You need to Pause folding and delete work/00.

To find work/00 click on Start>All Programs>FAHClient>Data Directory>work

There you can right-click on 00 and select delete.

Likely taken out of context by Mod Joe_H, as he did not quote the source of Mod bollix47's source instruction.

Both should know better to be using the dump command instead of this inelegant method.

The official method of dumping a WU is documented under Work Unit Control here:https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/F ... tUserGuide and if you know V6, here: https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/F ... ncesV6ToV7

Joe's recommendation is quicker but it does more damage to the scientific progress than doing it the right way. In his case, he was working with a WU that was crashing a machine. In your case the WU was not crashing anything and you were simply too impatient and not being considerate of the science. --dump N is the right way to be impatient because it won't waste another 7.7 days on a (presumably) good WU.

By the way, you didn't answer my question about a DUMP report.

What I did to find this, was to use the forum's search box, and this was the result. Having two mods with the same method on different WUs (although the context of the second one was unknown) led me (mistakenly, I admit) to believe that it was a normal way to do it. I will follow the --dump method that bruce has linked to from now on. Perhaps the other post should be edited, so that it is clear that the method stated there is not the correct one (except in that one unique situation).

Thanks, I will use that method from now on.

After waiting 58+ minutes, the progress was still displaying 0.00%. Many core/WU combinations start displaying progress right from 0.01% on up, but this must be one of those core/WU combinations that do not display the progress starting at 0.01%. So I (incorrectly, I admit) thought that there was some serious problem with the WU, that after all that time there was zero (not even 0.01%) progress.

You're probably basing your assumptions on a history of WUs for FahCore_a4. I suspect that FahCore_a3 makes fewer progress reports that V7 can process. Every FahCore is different from other FahCores -- sometimes in subtle ways.

OK, thanks, bruce and Joe_H, for getting me up to speed on these WUs. This same system currently has a P6099 (5, 22, 348) WU, with:
  • ETA: 5.46 days
  • Base Credit: 1588.00
  • Estimated Credit: 4186.27
  • Estimated PPD: 758.59
  • Estimated TPF: 1 hour 19 mins
  • Assigned: 2013-01-26T20:54:33Z
  • Timeout: 2013-02-03T13:42:33Z
  • Expiration: 2013-02-08T16:06:33Z
I do notice that after reaching 1.00%, the FahCore_a3/P6099 combination does update the progress every 0.01%. Perhaps it is only from 0.00% to 0.99% that the 0.01% granularity is not available for FAHClient/FAHControl to read and display.

My guess would be that FahClient or FahControl got its first solid clue about TPF only after the first frame was completed, then started to extrapolate the fractional progress values based on that. The ETA is just an Estimated Time of Arrival, after all.

OK, but other core/WU combinations do use the preliminary data from 0.00% to 0.99% to display the Estimated progress so far. I think if the data is available from 1.00% to 100.00%, it should also probably be there from 0.00% to 0.99%.

Why would you think that?

A train left station A at [hh:mm:ss] bound for station B. When will it reach station B?

Without a number for the average speed or second progress report from which you could calculate a speed, there's no way to estimate how long it will take to reach 100%?

As you know, the FahCores were developed independently of others and V7 has to deal with the current version of each FahCore in whatever condition it happens to be in. That includes whatever clues they leave behind as to how much progress they've made.

I'd guess the client/control might retain some performance data if you've previously folded WUs from a particular project. Chances are that if you run into a brand new project or install fresh (not keeping the FAH data folder), at least the very first frame of a WU needs to be completed for "new" projects before any estimates can be given. Like bruce mentioned, most likely there are also differences on how frequently the cores report their progress.

That's what I have seen. The first time it folds a project it can only give performance after the first frame. After it has completed a WU from a project it remembers the performance and guesses it will be the same for each successive WU from that project. Sometimes you will see it way off base (such as after a hardware change or if it is a slow WU in that project).

The work unit was completed by another folder:

Hi xxxxx (team xxxx),
Your WU (P6098 R3 C69 G293) was added to the stats database on 2013-02-04 20:06:47 for 14161.8 points of credit.
