One thing I noticed is that the Windows updates from a week or two ago, applied to one computer out of four, have made it unable to run core 17 WUs where it could before. Core 15 WUs still run, and I've seen that the GPU is solid.

I remember seeing that update on one of my systems (normally I tell windows update to hide that type of update but I didn't this time) and yes it did mess with the GPU drivers and caused some problems. I re-installed the appropriate drivers from the manufacturer's site and all was good after that.

I have had troubles with a variety of devices after I accepted drivers recommended by Windows Update. Typically, when Windows tells me that I need new drivers, I use that as a reminder to go to the manufacturer's site and download their latest non-beta driver for things like a mouse or network adapters. If it's a GPU, I also rely on the recommendations of FAH Donors that have been published here on foldingforum.org.

General rule: Don't ever auto-update drivers!

If it isn't broken, then don't allow anyone to blindly fix it for the only outcome that produces change is to break it.

I prefer a slight variation on that:

Don't ever auto-update!
