I received a WU that was already credited to someone else

Post by VirtualCtor »

Today, I received the following WU in my client:

Code: Select all

00:17:42:WU00:FS01:0x22:Project: 11751 (Run 0, Clone 6032, Gen 2)
00:17:42:WU00:FS01:0x22:Unit: 0x000000078ca304e75e6bbb6dd94c4d2c
This WU completed processing and was submitted:

Code: Select all

02:16:03:WU00:FS01:0x22:Completed 990000 out of 1000000 steps (99%)
02:17:13:WU00:FS01:0x22:Completed 1000000 out of 1000000 steps (100%)
02:17:18:WU00:FS01:0x22:Saving result file ..\logfile_01.txt
02:17:18:WU00:FS01:0x22:Saving result file checkpointState.xml

02:17:34:WU00:FS01:Upload 86.14%
02:17:37:WU00:FS01:Upload complete
But the server did not like it:

Code: Select all

02:17:37:WU00:FS01:Server responded WORK_QUIT (404)
02:17:37:WARNING:WU00:FS01:Server did not like results, dumping
I went to try to figure out why this was the case and it turns out that this WU was already returned by zientek106 on 2020-03-30 13:17:09.

Why are finished WUs being sent out again?

This happended to me aswell but on another project (close in numbering so might be similar).

My computer never managed to upload though.

The primary reason why WUs are sent out more than once is that somebody got the WU and could not finish it. Of the failed WUs, that arrive back at the FAH servers, several things can happen. In no particular order:
1) The WU fails because it was in an invalid configuration when it was generated.
2) The client running the WU is overclocked and, in fact, unstable
3) The WU passes the Timeout and is therefore assumed to be lost.

In all cases, the WU is reissued a limited number of times.

Especially in case 3, it's possible that both WUs are still "in flight" and either one may be returned first. (Each one becomes an independent assignment.)

When duplicates are, in fact, issued and are returned, each one can receive credit. Without any additional information, I'm going to assume that's true in your case.

Hey Bruce,

I wanted to point out that this particular server appears to be causing multiple issues (See threads in "issues with specific server"

I have a WU that fails on uploading every time at 0.51% uploaded.

Understood.

I recently commented in a topic called "PLEASE_WAIT" that there's a pending fix for some upload problems. Being an optimist, I'm hoping that the same fix may help with other upload problems which do not include the PLEASE_WAIT message. I have no way of knowing, though.

Hmmm, In this particular case, I did not get credit. There is only one person listed as having processed the WU and the WU passed days before I even received the it.

WU in question: https://apps.foldingathome.org/wu#proje ... 6032&gen=2

You can see from the log snippits that I processed the WU, but I am not listed in the status as having processed it or having a failure. I'm not clear what combination of factors from your list would cause this. Why would a WU be processed again after it was successful and there were no previous failures?

Oh, well, probably not important, just very odd. Thanks!

That's the same machine I was connecting to. Looks like others have noted that this machine may have issues, so hopefully it will get fixed.

I hope they remember to reboot it three times for maximum stability.

This just happened to me again.

Work unit: project:11751 run:0 clone:5232 gen:13
This work unit was already credited on 2020-04-02 18:58:21.
Note that a single person successfully processed the work unit. There are no errors associated with the work unit on the page.

Why are work units that were already credited 6 days ago being sent out today?

Re: I received a WU that was already credited to someone els

I spotted a similar one here https://apps.foldingathome.org/wu#proje ... 034&gen=12
despite someone posting their log where they got it assigned almost 25 hrs after the first person was assigned it despite it being successfully returned in 5 hrs.

I wonder...? From Linus Tech's server video we saw a glimpse of bandwidth loads and the cross server communication seems to massively outweigh any client to server loads, and from the EOC stats pages showing frequent 0 point updates due to fah points flat-file generation getting paused when they become inundated, makes me wonder what other things become slow to get updated? so maybe duplicate WUs are getting sent out simply because whatever process hasn't had the time to update them yet?

edit> oh, but yeah, 6 days seems like an extreme length of time but 117xx come from the cancer institute's servers and I noticed a few days ago that of the 3 servers they have, one of them has been Down status for many days in a row and finally got taken off the serverstatus page completely, so maybe your WU was lost in that transition?

Some of this can come from returns to Collection Servers, the WS will not have information that a particular WU has been returned until the results are uploaded from the CS to the WS. Normally this occurs within a relatively short time, but under the high network loads lately there have been substantial delays. That has sometimes resulted in WUs returned within the Timeout to CS, but the WS issuing a WU again because it had not received the WU by the timeout.
