Size of PS3 WUs compared to PC WUs

Postby andrewbee » Mon Feb 14, 2011 5:23 am

Hi,

My PS3 seems to rip through WUs much faster than my PCs. Is it really that much faster, or are the WUs sized differently?

Thanks

There's no direct way to compare WUs for one platform with WUs for another platform.

There are some similarities between CPU and SMP projects but some differences, too. There are some similarities between PS3 projects and GPU projects but some differences, too. The differences between the first pair and the second pair are even more pronounced.

My 5 year old i mac, the 2 ghz C2D in my signature gets about 1100 or 1200 PPD it cost me $1495.00
my 80 Gig & 120 gig PS3's get about 1000 PPD EACH !!
to replace each one today is $299

$299 = 1000 PPD is a great deal !!!
Just set it and forget it, maybe clean off the dusk every now and then!!

Well my I7-920@3.8 ghz gets about 17k ppd on A3 smp wu's for which I only paid 650 dollars to put this system together. When I do a -bigadv wu, I'm getting around 30k ppd. Now the question is, are you really getting the bang for the buck that you think you are?

Yeah, by today's standards the PS3 isn't very good in terms of PPD/$ and PPD/watt. A GT 430, which doesn't require that strong a GPU to power it, can get several thousand PPD and costs around $70. As long as you've got a new enough computer that it has a PCI-E slot, you can rack up points at a fairly good clip for not that much cash.

Sure, if the computer runs 24/7 anyway, and the PC is already paid for.

It's a mistake to assume that $70 is the only cost of being able to run a GPU. You still need a PC that costs at least as much as the PS3, if not 2-3 times more.

I believe the scenario suggested was 'if' you have a PC with an available PCIe x16 slot available it would only cost you ~$70 up front.

But the comparison of an all in one up front configuration a $299 PS3 is kind of tough to beat, but not impossible, I'm setting up:

MBD - VIA NanoBGA2 VIA VX900 Micro ATX - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813157209 - $57
RAM - PNY Optima 1GB PC2400 (600) DDR2 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820178153 - $18
HDD - Samsung Spinpoint MP4 250GB 7200RPM SATA - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822152234 - $40
PSU - Antec Basiq BP430W - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371023 - $45
Total - $160

Now add in the cheapest case made and the diff into a graphics and you could easily throw a GTS250 and fall below the $299 mark. As far as efficiency I'm not 100% on the finite details of the PS3 and PPD/$/Watt..
Phenom II x4 920 @ 2.94GHz 4.3kppd | VIA PV530 @ 1.8GHz w/9600GT 3.2kppd |
__Core2Duo T8100 @ 2.1GHz 1.2kppd |
