Well, that is the case with all drm locked platforms, and has been the case for many years.
If you want freedom, build your own and instal open-source.

Or build your own and run MS and have something in the middle between Sony and Apple.

The continuum of choices is rather broad.

Man, i'm so dispappointed, there goes my heater... well at least my computer is a good heater but it consume too much power to let it run 24/24 like the ps3. And if it's not for F@H no way i'm letting my PS3 run for nothing.

A Watt of heat is a watt of heat, so when considering the "good heater" aspects of a PS3 or a PC, it costs you the same amount to warm the room, either way.

In terms of computing power, though, there's a pretty wide variation. One Watt-hour does not fold the same number of proteins. You'll find a number of discussions on the forum which report values in terms of PPD/W. Though ever piece of equipment is different, most PCs will have a better PPD/W efficiency that most PS3's so you can do more folding for the same amount of room heating or, looking at it another way, you can do the same amount of folding and pay less for the room heating power. YMMV.

My 2c

Folding is the only thing I did with the PS3 (other than heat the house for "free"). It was 100% reliable unlike the early GPU clients.

Good for Sony as far as supporting the project this far but...

Screw Sony for just ending support! They made my PS3 worthless!

Sell it while there's still time (i.e. before the PS4 start getting pre-orderable).

Mine works great as a Blue-Ray player and a Netflix system. Use it all the time.
