Which stats are you checking?

EOC shows that 15K cpu return plus your 66.8K gpu return: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ... =&u=536789
I realised my error-stupid phone was showing a cached version of the page :(

Then depending on when and how often they check, it can be a few hours before the credit will show up on third party stats sites. The second WU with an estimate of 66832 points does show up in the official stats for 66835 points as of 4:03 AM PDT.

One note after looking over your log, now that you have things set up you should set the CPU count for processing from -1 to 20. By default the client reserves one CPU thread for the GPU out of the 24 available. That leaves 23 which is a large prime and will never be used. 22 is a multiple of another large prime, 11, and that also is excluded. 20 is the next available even number.
Hi Joe, Are you saying that even with the system set to 23 cores she will not be using those 23 just 22 because its the prime? Im a bit confused if im honest...

As you can see from your log the client is already making the change for you:

09:57:36:WU02:FS00:0xa3:Mapping NT from 23 to 20

Prime numbers over 5 can be a problem for some projects and the client does make an attempt to remove the possibility of those failures. A prime number like 23 will not work and 22/21 both decompose to a prime number (11x2 & 7x3) so the client eliminates those and ends up, as shown, with 20 (4x5 or 2x2x5).

If you want to use those other 3 cores for folding you can add another cpu slot but restrict it to 3 CPUs in it's configuration.

Cheers Bollix,

So as a rule it will always Map to 20 cores...

Surely folding with the remaining 3 cores (would be 4 but one is just for the GPU) is almost a waste of time? Take ages to finish anything with little and no bonus points?

Is there a simple code i can put in the expert section for this?

Am i even earning bonus yet since my little break?

Yes, for CPU folding the current cores will never actually use 23 threads as it is a large prime. The cores are based on Gromacs code that should allow partitioning into any number of threads, but in practice it was found to lead to excessive failures when the number was a "large" prime or multiple of a large prime. Some additional issues were found with odd numbers.

So what this means for folding is that the large prime numbers greater than 11 are excluded, as well as their multiple such as 22 (2x11). Most projects do okay on settings of 7, but a number have had problems with that setting and have been restricted from systems using that setting. A very few projects have had issues using the setting of 5, and I don't recall any projects having trouble using a setting of 3. WU's from some projects are issued with wrapper code to use acceptable values, you can see an example of that in your log where it reports that the core is "mapping NT from 22 to 20". Not all projects have the wrapper code from what I have seen, so giving a specific usable setting may get assignments to some additional projects.

However if you are concerned that some resources are not being utilized by folding, that should not be too much of an issue. The additional processing contributed by a virtual CPU core from hyper-threading is a fraction of that provided by a "real" core. Adding an additional slot to use the 3 virtual cores might give you a bit more folding, but I suspect you will find it slows folding in the main CPU slot by more than it gains folding a different WU with the small slot.

P.S. Theoretically 21 could work with some larger proteins being modeled and because 7 usually works. But I suspect it has never been tested and has been excluded as part of the general finding of problems with larger odd number in practical usage of the cores.

If you have a 24 core computer with a GPU that is folding then yes your cpu slot will map to 20 cores. Manually setting the number of CPUs to 20 as Joe has suggested will ensure all FAHCores & projects just use 20 which is the best working configuration assuming you're doing GPU folding as well. If you were not using a GPU then the cpu slot could use all 24. You could even force it under your current setup to use all 24 but that would just slow both your slots due to contention.

Whether or not you want to setup another slot to use your remaining cores is entirely up to you ... personally I probably wouldn't as I like to leave a bit of processing power for me.

Your passkey is qualified and you are receiving bonus points.

Cheers Bollix.

I agree, will leave her as she is... seems to be doing ok :) except the client has just gone into blank mode (installing or updating)... can not open it to check exactly and will lose log when i reboot :(

Cheers :)

I'd probably run a slot on 3 CPUs, but then that's just me.

Are you sure you'll lose the log? Ordinarily they're renamed and placed in the "logs" directory.

What would need to insert to create that 3 cpu slot bruce? might Set that running on an evening and weekend.

You are correct, i forgot that there all saved

Using FAHControl (aka Advanced Control) Configure > Slots > Add

A window will pop up ... ensure that CPU is selected and change the number of CPUs from -1 to 3

Click on OK and then Save.

Right clicking on the slot under Folding Slots in FAHControl's main window will allow you to pause/fold when you wish.

Cheers Bollix, will add that later :)

i have the advanced control open and its telling me (has done for the last 2 days) that my gpu is doing 600k a day! 2 hours ago it told me its was doing 500k... if i had just restarted or start of a new project first 20mins i would understand but this is days now, also said the cpu is 1591ppd, again said that for the few days... its doing about 15k.

Would a picture help?

Re: Finally got around to pricing new system! cpu and gpu he

Post by bollix47 »

Although I have not seen many examples where the estimates were so far off it is not uncommon for them to be inaccurate in Advanced Control, especially, but not exclusively to, when the work unit is just starting. There is an online bonus calculator where you can select your project and input the actual frame times as shown in your log to calculate the correct PPD.

e.g. your estimated TPF shows 7 min 14 secs ... if you input that in the bonus calculator for P13001 it shows a PPD of 151332.94 which is in line with what I see on my 780s for that project.

Eventually you can setup HFM.net (from the 3rd party forum) and it does calculate accurate figures but it doesn't work with version 7.4.4 of the client so until it does the online calculator is your best bet for getting more accurate estimates. A new version of HFM is coming "soon". Also, the accuracy should eventually improve in Advanced Control.

With the current 2 projects you're running I would say you're looking at around 200K PPD in total.

I didnt know about the calculator, cheers for that.

As i said if it was the start of the project i would have expected to see what i am... however its just as bad and i am now nearly 50% in

I do remeber the monitor from years ago... be nice when that gets relaunched :)

What is stock and boost settings for your 780 bollix?

Both my 780s are running under Linux ... i.e. a different o/s and drivers:

For P13001

Stock (863/900) is seeing ~145K PPD
Factory o/c (967/1020) is seeing ~179K PPD

For comparison my 780ti ... also running in Linux

Factory o/c (1006/1072) is seeing ~250K PPD

Im on windows 7 pro so mine was always going to be lower...

The OC version is near as the same as mine.

Ti does give a large boost... intresting... kinda wish i had brought that after all but hey ho... i need to run a second psu as it crashs when running one of the benchmarks

*edit*

Might have a little tweak with settings and see what she does... or doesnt!
