GTX 970 not as it seems...

Post by billford »

Looks like the gamers are getting annoyed with NVidia and (one of) their Maxwell cards:

Nvidia explains GeForce GTX 970's memory performance issues, admits error in specs

Probably not related in any way to the driver bug that affects folding, but suggests NV may need to look at their quality control systems?

This is disappointing, but you know, I don't see this as a problem. Nvidia should have clarified this, but honestly I think the card is still excellent for almost all use cases, except perhaps for a few games like Shadows of Mordor or perhaps Battlefield where you might run into this. So few applications use 3.5+ GB of GPU RAM and this card is amazing for its performance, so considering the card as a whole and its price, it's still a phenomenal card.
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

I certainly wouldn't argue with that and it wouldn't stop me from buying one for folding (I don't do gaming). Although I prefer the 980.

But it doesn't reflect very well on NVidia.

i highly recommend the 980. but you are right it doesn't reflect well on nvidia. nothing much does at this point, other than the card performance on certain work units.

It is mostly a non-issue that has been blown out of proportion.

But we should see a bunch of open box 970s showing up on the cheap very soon

For F@H I love my Strix 970, gains an av. of around 350k PPD, also have had few issues with it not allowing max settings on alot of the games I play (when I play them as normally my rigs fold 24/7)
