Help optomize

Post by Ricorocks »

Mod note: topic moved to appropriate forum -j

Hi Bruce, Thank you for all the helps so far!

I've just installed FAH on my 6th machine, fairly speedy machine, with NVIDIA GTX635.

Now running, while I'm working & full, my plan is to see temps in this config. Prior to install cpu 36, mb 28, gpu 36C, I'm planning to shift to when idle, after I get temps from speccy. From the latest machine's log:

Code: Select all

Hi Bruce,

I can see why Fah can be a hard sell, temps.. The latest PC with the GTX635, the cabinet that the PC sits in went from 81F to 87F, in that time observed 78,28,72C (cpu,mb,gpu), some may say this is safe, speccy says orange or red zone. I force cooled the cabinet large fan, so as to see if I could bring down the temps, by controlling, the box temp. the PC sit in. Best I could achieve with a 20" fan blowing directly in the box was 87F goes to 81F. At 82F cabinet temp speccy said 72,28,78C. This is my daily work machine & I consider the temps too warm. FAH shut down temps 36,28,36C box temp now 83F

I understand from your previous post regarding hardware forums, I'm trying to help the cause here & seeking guidance IMO suggestions on cooling (benefit FAH), could/should have a little leeway. I'm sure many members with high point scores, have gone through these cooling issues previously & can be a great source of knowledge. Actually it would be very interesting to see/hear about a rig designed for these conditions.

The box the PC sits in has two levels PC sits on shelf in the box. Has one exhaust fan, one floor intake vent & one top vent.

If this is out of bounds for this forum, please advise what you or others deem good forums to seek advice from.

Note the above was for testing only

Thank You
Rico

Cooling is a direct consequence of how much air you can get over the heatsinks of the cpu/gpu, The more air you can shift the better the cooling. If you are space limited I would suggest more powerful fans in the case itself and/or folding only only the gpu or cpu. Cleaning all the dust bunnies out might help as well.

this thread should really be in the hardware section but that's up to the mods

Folding pushes most hardware to the max, and for air cooled components, that typically means 80 degC or thereabouts. Manually increasing fan speed can help, but the only way to get significantly cooler is water cooling or massively overspecced air coolers (typically on mid range GPUs that then take up 3 slots and end up 3 times as long as the reference PCB).
Right now I'm running 12 GPUs, some in huge cases, others on open test benches, others in mini ITX HTPC cases, but they all sit at between 70 - 80 degC (reference blower coolers at the top end, dual fan OEM coolers nearer 70).
Another option I've heard mentioned for controlling heat on modern GPUs is manually setting a lower power or temperature limit or under clocking using the various overclocking and driver tools - performance is reduced across the board but it will give you lower temps.

Your temperatures are fine! I have the same. But if you want advice for putting some case fans make a picture.

Yes, and no.

If you buy a brand-name computer, that company has assigned one or more techincal people to decide if it's properly designed. Their checklist includes making sure that the power supply is big enough, that the heat sink(s) are big enough, and that the the cooling is adequate. They put enough fans in the case and make sure that the airflow is unobstructed. They consider the hottest possible room temp and 100% load, etc. even though most system will never see 100% load.

When you design your own computer or you upgrade one one designed by someone else (whether it's by adding a GPU or by overclocking or whatever) you're assuming that that engineer designed in enough excess capacity so that power and heat will still bel adequate when running at 100%. If your new design needs a bigger p/s or more fans or a design that has better internal airflow or a 2-slot GPU that dumps the heat out the back, that's not really an issue for FAH -- although I can see how it would seem like it.

As I sit here in a very warm (hot!) Southern California room, this computer is on the floor blowing hot air on my leg. I either need to move the computer, design better airflow in my room, or temporarily suspend part of FAH. That's not FAH's fault -- I'm the one who designed this space in my room.

GR8 comments thanks!

I added a small fan blowing in (intake air) side, this appears to be obstructed by PSU, but it's steady 1-2 degree improvement. I would think, the smaller platform CPU's run hotter, I have a 45nm, I think the other is 24nm. So it it a gen rule smaller platforms run hotter?
Currently forced fed 76F air, forced air exhaust: I'm running cpu 67-68, mb 45, GPU 71 (all Celsius for the three). My last ace, is I can make, room indoors closet (wife keeps house 74F year round) closet stays 74F. This might be marginal for cooling, but less dust accumulation.

I hear you Bruce, lived along time in the San Gabriel Valley, twas extra hot!

Thanks All & Take Care
