1060 3GB only 200,000PPD on Pentium J3710

Postby foldinghomealone » Mon May 22, 2017 12:58 pm

Dear all,

is it normal that a 1060 3GB makes only 200,000PPD on a board with a Pentium J3710 on it?
I don't know which board it is, but the board supports PCIE-2.0 only.

Is the reason for low PPD the CPU performance or PCIe 2.0 support? Or is sth. else wrong?

Hope somebody can help and give details.

I always thought that CPU-performance is not really important as even when the thread is 100%, it is 'blocked' for I/O reasons and not for computing.

Thanks in advance.

How long did you run the GPU slot yet? It may take some work units until the right average PPD is shown.

On Windows can you start the tool GPU-Z and while folding note the Bus Interface speed e.g. PCIe x16 2.0 @ x4 2.0

Edit: CPU is the problem. The official tech specs say it can only do pcie 2.0 x4 which may slow down your GPU by up to 50% on Windows.

Workaround: Another CPU which has more pcie lanes or Linux which needs less bandwidth.

Thanks foldy for your quick reply.
It has been folding continuously for the last two days or so. It makes from 160' to 280' PPD.

It's not my computer and therefore I don't have access to it.
It should be this board: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/J3710M/index.de.asp

Do the MB's details show sth. suspicious? I will ask to install GPU-Z and get some more information

This small mainboard with the J3710 has limited pcie slot speed. For faster GPUs like the GTX 1060 this will reduce PPD under Windows.
But 200k PPD is still not too bad and you save some power because less PPD is less watt in this case.

GPU-Z shows "PCIE2.0 @x1"

Does that mean that the board would also limit a 1050 or 1050 TI?

The 1050 makes 125k PPD and 1050 Ti 145k PPD. As your minimum gtx 1060 PPD is 160k PPD that could fit.
But I am not sure about that. Has anyone tried a gtx 1050 at pcie 2.0 x1?
