With starting grad school soon I have realized that my 7+ year old laptop rapidly seeing more issues, it's time to build a personal PC. I basically will use it for very light gaming (as I do all my gaming on PS4) and writing papers/research/etc. I have cleaned out an area to use as my study area so I can now have a desktop again (first time in over 9 years, I still have my old desktop someplace).

Cousin of mine has a desktop with a Intel i5 3330 chip in it, 8GB DDR3 RAM, and a crappy GPU. I was considering getting a GTX 1050 as it would meet my gaming requirements (mainly World of Tanks which I used to run on just a lowly 8600GT).

I figured why not do something good with my idle time and possibly even earn a few bucks while doing so? Looks like, mining CureCoin + FLDC, it would be around $1.8/day or $0.20/day by itself (pays for the electricity at least). The money is honestly just a plus.

Does this sound feasible using the CPU listed above?

Sounds perfectly feasible, you might want to consider the more powerful 1050ti, running costs won't be much more (if any) but performance will be better

+1 for 1050Ti 4Gb, also very good for WoT and WoWS

My personal recommendation (for my own purchase): Always look for a Ti version.

For performance on a budget, look at the new AMD Ryzen CPUs. The quad-core, 3.1 GHz Ryzen 3-1200 goes for around $110, and you can get a B-350 MoBo for $90 or so (current Newegg prices).
